May 26, 2025, Nag's Head Wood

Fabulous wood with easy track to follow, you can't get lost as it is paralleled by a big wire fence for some of its length. Follow the bridleway from east to west through the wood and you will emerge upon one of the most picturesque and tranquil vistas in the south-western part of the Moors, with a view west up Stony Gill Hole, flanked with plantations / woods and carpeted with short verdant grass. Absolute perfect spot for a picnic under the mature trees at the western edge of the wood.

Fabulous views and plenty of routes, well worth planning routes around this area. Hawnby Hill is considered one of the finest summit ridges in the Moors, with great views and steep slopes on either side. The western flank has patches of exposed limestone, while the eastern side features native woodland.

May 26, 2025, Hawnby Village

Very twee village that has so many hiking routes in the immediate vicinity. Per Wikipedia: "The village is mentioned twice in the Domesday Book as Halmebi in the Allerton hundred. It was part of the Thornton-le-Moor manor and records local landowners to be Fredegaest and Ulf. After the Norman invasion, the lands passed to the King and were granted to Robert Malet", and "Hawnby became the first village in England to have all of the buildings switch from normal lights to dark-skies friendly lighting in an effort to cut light pollution."

Path around the platform and down Newgate Bank can be quite boggy in winter. Good views of Easterside and Hawnby Hills. Practically yards from Newgate Bank car park.
