Tips from the Community

Charlie Eddington
August 24, 2025, Kepwick Limestone Quarry Incline

Colonel Sir Joshua Crompton, 19th century owner of the Kepwick Estate built a railway line in the early 1820s which carried limestone from the quarry on Kepwick Moor, spoil from which can be seen in the very lumpy landscape in this area, down to the lime kilns and stone yard to the west. Fuel for the kilns could be easily brought in and the final product taken away on the Thirsk to Yarm turnpike road (now the A19). With a very steep incline up to the quarry the railway used gravity; as the full wagons were sent down slope they pulled the empty ones up towards the quarry, whilst horses pulled the wagons along the flat plain to the west. The gap in the line seen in the photo once had a wooden bridge to allow the railway to cross the road.

Castle Lodge is quite an impressive building to look at. Built on the sides of a daunting hill, on slightly open land in front, the views from the castle must be impressive

Situated on the main square, opposite some decent cycle parking this is a decent place to get breakfast. I had poached eggs on toast - very well cooked. There is some cycle themed memorabilia in the café which adds a nice touch.

Fun technical single-track descent, the best section of the paradise trail.

Almost definitely hike-a-bike on a gravel bike though easier since it's been stoned up and flattened. A tough peddle up on a mountain bike, great fun on the way down though. A really nice view and a pretty trail - proper rewilded moorland. Highland cattle often in the field between the two gates though now mostly fenced off and the latch on the gate at the bottom has now been removed so just give it a push or pull!

Take a ride into the Shire and take a look at Bilbo and Frodo's house. A good replica of Bag End (private house)
