Tips from the Community

An Argentona
September 12, 2026, Loch nam Bonnach

Small and remote loch in Caithness, surrounded by peat bogs and practically uninhabited moors. Its Gaelic name, Loch nam Bonnach, means approximately «lake of the bannocks», the traditional Scottish flatbreads once cooked on a griddle or stone. It is not a monumental or touristy lake: the interesting thing is precisely its location in one of the most open and solitary landscapes in northern Scotland, where water, peat and sky seem to occupy everything.

Priory ruins, originally built in the 13th century. Well worth exploring the grounds, it's very peaceful. There's a good coffee shop across the road too so grab a snack and eat it in the priory grounds.

Forested ruins of an ancient 1230 church & graveyard founded by a little-known order of monks.

The old metal posts from the viaduct that carried water from the canal on the left bank of the river, back over the river to a canal on the right bank of the river, and then to a dam for the old lime works.

An enjoyable walk through some truly ancient woodland. The loop can be completed in 1/2 an hour, and is very beautiful.
