This gem of late Gothic architecture was built in the 15th century together with the citizens' hospital, which was built at a right angle, for innocent citizens of the town of Braunau who had fallen into need. The architect can be found in the school environment of the famous Hans von Burghausen. The church has high, pointed-arched windows, buttresses in front of the wall and a high roof. Inside we can recognize it as a fine example of the so-called hexagonal churches, which are common in the Braunau district and in the neighboring Bavarian region, and admire its beautiful net rib vault made of regular diamonds. The altars were created in the late 17th century by the Baroque artist Sebastian Högenauer. Johannes Froschauer painted the altarpieces: "The Descent of the Holy Spirit" and "The Ascension of Christ". The Braunau Citizens' Hospital was founded in 1417 by the nobleman Hartprecht Harskircher at Zangberg Castle, the treasurer of Duke Frederick the Wise of Bavaria-Landshut, and Nikolaus Auer of Lichtenau. The construction of the hospital and church was completed by around 1430 and served as a care home for the elderly until 1956.

Through one of the curved alleys you reach the large town square, which already had these dimensions when the town was founded. On the lower town square there are still a considerable number of Gothic houses, with their narrow fronts, high pointed gables and rear buildings that cannot be seen from the square. Since these houses have only been changed a little, we can still find the narrow, often quite winding staircases inside. With a few exceptions, the middle town square was largely destroyed in the great town fire in 1874. On the east side in particular, the high gable walls had to be torn down and the roofs turned 90 degrees. On the upper town square we find the houses of the once wealthy cloth makers and linen weavers. The houses have wide fronts, the windows are framed by delicate window frames and the interior of these houses has wide staircases and corridors, as well as rooms with some very beautiful stucco ceilings. The courtyards of these houses usually have covered loggias. Source: https://www.oberoesterreich.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/400744/braunauer-stadtplatz.html
