In today's Hungary (Intercisa-Dunaújváros, Savaria-Szombathely), many reliefs and votive altar stones related to the Mithras cult have been found. The Mithras sanctuary in Fertőrákos, built in the 3rd century, is unique in Hungary, as the altar relief carved into the rocks is in its original location, and besides Aquincum (Óbuda), the reconstructed Mithras sanctuary in Hungary can only be seen here. The Mithras relief, standing abandoned since the 4th century, was found by Ferenc Storno Jr. in 1866 during an excursion, when he noticed that he was relaxing on a carved, painted stone. He immediately spoke to his father, Ferenc Storno Sen., who had begun to explore the area already dug up by the stonemason György Malleschitz from Fertőmeggyes, and erected a protective building over the carved altar relief.

Already in the late 19th century, Lajos Bella researched all the hilltop settlements around Sopron. He discovered 136 large and 60 smaller burial mounds on Burgstallberg. Around 1970, Gyula Szádeczky-Kardos found only a total of 159 of them during renewed surveying and mapping work. Systematic excavations took place from 1971 to 1978 under the direction of Erzsébet Patek.
