The Danish church painter Joakim Skovgaard created this picture in 1916. His fresco portrays the legendary and merciful Queen Dagmar. The monarch was married to Valdemar the Victorious and was canonized. She died in 1212. Due to the legendary Dagmar Cross, she is the most famous person buried in the church. The cross is a very beautiful and delicately enameled gold cross from the year 1000, which was found in the grave. Today, the Dagmar Cross is often given as a traditional gift for baptism.

The church, which dates back to the 12th century, is the old burial church of the Danish kings. Over twenty princes were buried here before the cathedral in Roskilde was designated as the burial church. The name plaques show how quickly the rulers died. The kings usually fell victim to murder and lists, because the Danish crown was a coveted object. The church, whose basic internal structure is in Romanesque style, originally belonged to a Benedictine monastery. However, after the church almost fell victim to a serious fire in 1241, the interior was rebuilt in the Gothic style.
