The fire in the wooden church of St. Luke the Evangelist in Warsaw's Bemowo district took place on the night of September 24-25, 2004, causing losses of around PLN 600,000. The fire broke out inside the church, and firefighters, struggling with very high temperatures, could not enter the interior to save objects. The church was closed, and a few minutes after the firefighters arrived, the roof collapsed. As a result of the fire, almost the entire wooden structure of the church was destroyed, but the relics of St. Padre Pio, which were in the church, survived. The fire, which broke out in the morning, spread quickly and destroyed the building in its entirety, despite the fact that there were other endangered buildings around, such as the rectory and a small bell tower. According to the faithful, the fire could have been the work of an arsonist, because there had been other arson attacks in the past, such as a burning waste paper booth.
