Iron Bridge (Regensburg) The current Iron Bridge was completed in 1991 and connects Regensburg's Old Town with the Lower Wöhrd district. The bridge had several wooden predecessors dating back to the 15th century and crosses the southern branch of the Danube at river kilometer 2,379.26. Due to its direct connection to the historic Old Town, a delicate steel structure with the load-bearing capacity for a future tram line was chosen for the new bridge in 1991. The 81-meter-long arch bridge with its elevated roadway is divided into spans of 23.70 m, 34.60 m, and 23.70 m, with a roadway width of 9 meters and a superstructure width of 16 meters. The oldest record of a wooden predecessor bridge at this location is found in a parchment manuscript that mentions a severe ice jam in 1431/32, during which the bridge was destroyed. Another manuscript mentions 1511 as the year the bridge was built, but this likely refers to the reconstruction of a bridge after an ice jam. An enormous ice jam in February 1784, at the end of an unusually cold, snowy winter, not only resulted in the loss of the central tower of the Stone Bridge but also the destruction of the wooden bridge to the Lower Wöhrd, despite attempts to weigh it down by piling up many stones. The bridge's destruction led to consideration at the time of connecting the Lower Wöhrd—as with the Upper Wöhrd—to the Old Town via a stairway leading from the Stone Bridge. A massive ice jam in February 1784, at the end of an unusually cold, snowy winter, not only resulted in the loss of the central tower of the Stone Bridge but also the destruction of the wooden bridge to the Lower Wöhrd, despite attempts to weigh it down by piling up many stones.
