The Union Brewery in Ljubljana dates back to 1864, and the Brewery Museum, established on site in 1986, is run with the support of its employees. It illustrates the history of beer in Slovenia, providing a detailed look at Slovenian production and consumption practices. This presentation, which also includes the living conditions and interests of the brewery workers, has earned the museum several awards. The exhibits come from the Institute of Hop Breeding and Brewing of the former Yugoslavia. Many were also donated to the museum by innkeepers or brewery employees. Visitors can follow the various stages of beer brewing. They experience the malthouse, the mashing process, the cellar vaults where the beer is aged and stored, the filtration and bottling plant, and the barrel storage facility. Representations of traditional Slovenian pubs with original furnishings, bottles with historical labels, and promotional materials are also on display. https://www.union-experience.si/en/discover-union-experience

When I was last here the food was good, and beer was even better. Their indoor space is basically a more modern looking "Bierkeller", but a small outdor "Biergarten" is too small, hardly a "garden", and worst of all, right next to one of the busiest streets in Ljubljana. So, unless you like your beer with a lot of car-exhaust fumes and traffic noise, you better stay inside. Or, especially in summertime, go rather to Gostilna Čad, that has a large, beautiful and proper garden, where you can enjoy your food and drinks in the shade and cool of big old chestnut trees.

Yup, mandatory postcard picture of Ljubljana. That's why you can hardly cross the "Three Bidges" (another mandatory tourist point) at the hight of tourist season. For someone who lived here all his life, recent overtourism is a bit painful to watch and has also completely changed the character of the old town, under the Castle Hill; from a relaxed, almost sleepy reminder of long gone Medieval times, to a bustling, hectic, noisy melee of mostly larger Asian groups (with face masks, white gloves, parasols and frantically signaling guides), and innumerous, more casually looking visitorst from all over the globe. But this is our bright future, isn't it?
