According to a famous Slovenian legend, God, when distributing the earth, forgot a small group of extremely modest people. Because they continued to wait patiently, he gifted them the ultimate gem he had secretly kept for himself: the Bohinj valley. The name of the lake therefore directly derives from the word 'Boh', which means 'God'. The lake, with its length of over four kilometers and a depth of 45 meters, is a gigantic body of water. It contains so much crystal-clear mountain water that if the lake were to be emptied all at once, the water level in the surrounding area would immediately rise noticeably. On the east side of the lake, near the picturesque village of Ribčev Laz, you will find the famous stone bridge and the historic Church of St. John the Baptist. This is one of the most photographed spots in the entire country and houses centuries-old frescoes that give the setting an almost fairytale-like appearance. The crystal-clear water is mainly fed by ice-cold mountain rivers and underground springs. From the shore, you can see fish swimming meters deep, although a dip in the summer requires a bit of perseverance, as the mountain water always remains refreshingly cold. Lake Bohinj is attractive at any time of day. Clouds are often still present in the morning, creating a magical connection between the lake and the landscape. This unity is palpable. It only partially comes across in the pictures.

Very nice asphalt road, that will take you from Bohinjska Bistrica to Lake Bohinj. Just keep in mind it isn't only a "cycle" path, as you have to share it with walkers, hikers, tractors, teenagers on various motorbikes (all speeding like crazy, of course), and if you are lucky - wild ducks or deer. So, take care, particularly in high season! Oh, and absolutely stop and drink at a wooden trough, you will see on the right side of the road. Sometimes it's just a trickle but it is always safe and delicious. And while doing this, think briefly about all those unfortunate urbanites, who can't get a decent glass of tap water at home, without a strong whiff of chlorine and some color tint - and consider yourself lucky. If you will be somewhat baffled by a wooden shed (named "Bravnjek"), with a small, grassy volleyball court behind it - don't be! Just use it happily, if you feel like it.
