Atmospheric ruins set amongst rugged surroundings
If it is a wild and rugged landscape with dramatic views that you are after, you can’t go wrong at Bradgate Country Park. Its 830 acres (336 ha) of grassland, heath, bracken and woodland are host to some of the best hikes in Leicestershire. At its heart are the atmospheric ruins of Bradgate House, the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey who spent nine days as Queen in 1553 before her beheading half a year later for treason.
The park is a wonderful place for a ramble, with its gnarled oak trees and rocky outcrops. Its high point is marked by the grand Old John Folly and rewards with a spectacular panorama of Leicester. Keep an eye out for the herds of red and fallow deer that roam within the boundary walls, whilst neighbouring Swithland Wood’s wildflower meadows and thriving wildlife are also a delight.
New adventures in the National Forest
Much of this part of the Midlands was neglected and bruised by hundreds of years of coal mining and heavy industry. Yet today, the west of Leicestershire is at the heart of a tremendous rewilding project, known as the National Forest.
Some of the best hiking trails in Leicestershire are found within its borders, such as at Beacon Hill Country Park. This patchwork of hills, mixed woodland and wetlands boasts a charming variety, such as alpacas, 700-million-year-old rock formations and intriguing sculptures. The view across the surrounding countryside from the 804-foot (245 m) Beacon Hill, the site of a Bronze Age hill fort, is stupendous.
History and heritage
A definitive menu of walks in Leicestershire wouldn’t be complete without visiting the trails around Bosworth Battlefield. The War of the Roses ended here in 1485, when Henry Tudor defeated Richard III, ushering in the Tudor period.
Nearby, the sumptuous open grassland and woodland that makes up Market Bosworth Country Park rewards with yet more excellent walking. Visit in autumn when the Japanese maples are at their most vibrant in an arboretum that also boasts redwoods and Himalayan birches. Meanwhile, spring sees the woodland come to life with bluebells, fritillaries, ox-eye daisies, cowslips and primroses.
Yes, the majority of trails in Leicestershire are circular. The region's country parks and nature reserves are particularly well-suited for loop hikes. For a walk that combines history with rolling countryside, the Burrough Hill Iron Age Fort to Burton Lazars loop is a great example of a longer circular route.
Many trails in Leicestershire are suitable for walking with a dog, but it's always best to check for specific restrictions, especially in parks with wildlife. Sence Valley Forest Park is a popular, dog-friendly natural area with numerous trails. Bradgate Park also welcomes dogs but requires them to be on a lead at all times to protect the deer herds.
Leicestershire has plenty of gentle trails perfect for a family outing or if you're new to hiking. The Watermead Country Park loop offers a flat, easy walk around a series of lakes just north of Leicester. Another excellent choice is the Sence Valley Country Park to Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve loop, which follows tranquil paths through a regenerated landscape.
For some of the most expansive views, head to the Charnwood Forest area. The summit of Beacon Hill, the second-highest point in Leicestershire, offers stunning panoramas. For the absolute highest point, the Bardon Hill loop takes you to the top, providing a unique perspective over the surrounding landscape.
The most significant long-distance path is the Leicestershire Round, a 100-mile circular route that encircles the entire county. For a more manageable but still substantial hike, you could try the Thornton Reservoir loop, which is a moderately challenging trail of around 8 miles (13 km).
Charnwood Forest offers a distinctly rugged and ancient landscape compared to the rest of the county. Trails here often feature rocky outcrops, heathlands, and woodlands. You can expect more varied terrain with some ascents and descents, such as those found within the highly-regarded Beacon Hill Country Park.
Absolutely. Leicestershire is rich in history. You can explore the site of the 1485 Battle of Bosworth, a pivotal moment in English history, on the From Shenton Station to the Bosworth Battlefield Trail loop. This walk takes you through the historic landscape and key points of interest related to the battle.
The canal towpaths, particularly along the Grand Union Canal, provide miles of peaceful, level walking. They are ideal for gentle strolls and observing canal life. The area around Foxton Locks is especially popular, but for a slightly longer and quieter waterside experience, the Grand Union Canal Bridge Walk via Foxton Junction is a fantastic option.
There are over 1,800 hiking routes to discover across Leicestershire on komoot. These range from easy, family-friendly paths in country parks to more challenging treks through the ancient landscapes of Charnwood Forest.
The region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Hikers often praise the variety of scenery, from the peaceful canal towpaths and rolling fields to the unique, rocky terrain of Charnwood Forest. The well-maintained paths in parks like Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill Country Park are also frequently mentioned.
Several parks and reserves are local favorites for a day of walking. Some of the most popular include:
While many trailheads are best accessed by car, some key locations are reachable by public transport. For instance, several bus services run from Leicester and Loughborough to areas near Bradgate Park and Charnwood Forest. It's always a good idea to check local bus timetables for the most current information before you travel.
