Zabelstein Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

After the original lords of the castle died out, the castle on the Zabelstein came into the possession of the Würzburg diocese around 1300. The prince-bishops had the castle expanded considerably and the castle was soon considered impregnable. The fortress became the official seat and important documents and the episcopal treasure were housed here.

The castle was badly damaged during the Peasants' War, but was rebuilt afterwards. In 1689 there was a devastating fire and the heavily damaged castle was abandoned.

Today the remains are listed and can still give you an impression of the former facility.

The new observation tower offers a beautiful view of the Main Valley and the edge of the Steigerwald. The new tower should have been built a few meters higher so that the view is not restricted by the trees. A few more years and you'll sooner be able to admire the treetops 🙄

The commemorative plaque of "Hugo vom Zabelstein" tells a terribly beautiful horror story... "The little girl was ten years old - then the devil appeared"... if you want to know what's going to happen next, you should visit this great ruin!
