What happened back then: The events to which the monument refers are historically documented: In the spring of 1686, rumors of witchcraft and sorcery circulated in the villages belonging to the Schmoel estate. The estate owner at the time, Count Christoph Rantzau, promptly had 15 men and women arrested and sentenced to death for harmful magic, as jurisdiction at that time lay with the landowners, to whom the peasants were subject.
