Fernpass Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This trail is almost legendary. He is the first driving challenge on the Albrecht Route and the Via Claudia Augusta. Over the years, the iron-studded wagon wheels of the old Römerkarren have worked their way deep into the stony path, and even today the traces of bygone times are visible. But the Fernsteinsee and the castle Fernstein are a feast for the eyes and a pit stop is recommended.

The photos don't match the trail. The lower part towards the Grubigbahn valley station is an easy flow trail with no technical challenges. I would call it a family trail. It was probably only recently built. There are older videos on YouTube that show the original condition.

The lowest section of the trail, which you can reach via the Lermoos Höhenweg, is actually not difficult to drive and can also be incorporated into a valley tour with a hardtail

Not so nice at the top. It more or less follows the fall line. It gets better further down. Can't keep up with the Blindseetrail.

Nice trail that can be optimally "switched on" before starting the Blindseetrail by taking the Grubig II all the way up, the trail entry is then after two serpentines of the forest road below the mountain station. The trail itself runs a little unimportant down the ski slope at the beginning, but then becomes more and more interesting: you move a lot in somewhat washed-out gullies with partly coarse scree. Sure: if you like it more flowy, you won't be thrilled here. For those who like such a classic “alpine” character (S2), I would definitely recommend driving the trail and directly attaching the blind lake trail.

Nice, initially quite demanding trail with a few tighter curves, steps, roots, etc. The few artificial elements (drops, wallrides) somehow seem out of place and don't “work” particularly well (drops pretty flat, etc.), but they can too can easily be left out. Later the trail becomes technically much easier, but then it runs in a creek valley and can be very slippery when wet. Overall very varied and beautiful landscape, the wooden elements could have been saved.
