A wonderful promenade stretches along the northeastern shore of Lake Schluchsee. The view stretches far across the lake to the opposite shore. Those who prefer a more natural setting can also walk along the beach, which is just as enjoyable.

It felt like 100 smaller and larger waterfalls all along the gorge! Simply a great natural spectacle 👍

The path through the Gauchach Gorge is especially not recommended for people with even a slight fear of heights! I myself had no problem with that, but my hiking companion had to go beyond its limits. The path is sometimes very narrow, slippery and muddy, there are no steel "retaining fences" like in the Wutach Gorge. Absolute surefootedness, good physical condition and good shoes are a real MUST here! It becomes particularly problematic when a hiker comes towards you and you have to pass each other. I would classify the section as difficult depending on the weather conditions. Still a real highlight for me and highly recommended for advanced hikers (sticks are helpful !!); you are in a real jungle with a breathtaking view into the depths of the Gauchach!

Visually the largest, most beautiful, covered bridge over the Wutach. At the mouth of the Gauchach. Ideal for sheltering when it rains. When the sun is shining, it's nice to rest in the spacious area around the mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the most impressive natural monuments to visit in Bonndorf im Schwarzwald?

The region is renowned for its dramatic river landscapes. The Wutach Gorge, often called the "Grand Canyon of the Black Forest," offers an overwhelming primal landscape with roaring waterfalls and rugged valleys. Its tributary, the Gauchach Gorge, is considered a special gem for its narrowness, staircase-like stream bed, and primeval forest feel. Another notable spot is the Kanadiersteg, a covered bridge at the confluence of the Gauchach and Wutach, which connects hiking routes between the two gorges.

What kind of hiking experiences can I expect at the natural monuments around Bonndorf?

Hiking in the gorges, such as the Wutach Gorge and Gauchach Gorge, offers wild-romantic experiences. Paths can be narrow, stony, and slippery, requiring good footwear and sure-footedness. The Gauchach Gorge, in particular, involves walking very close to the water, sometimes over water-washed stones. For those seeking longer adventures, a complete hike through the Wutach Gorge can take about two days. There are also numerous circular walks and shorter routes available throughout the region.

What should I wear or bring when hiking in the natural monuments?

Good footwear is essential, especially for the gorges where paths can be narrow, rocky, and slippery. While walking sticks might be a hindrance in some very narrow passages, they can be useful elsewhere. It's advisable to wear appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions, as the Black Forest climate can change. Always carry enough water and snacks, especially for longer tours.

Are there family-friendly or dog-friendly natural monuments in the Bonndorf area?

Yes, the region offers options for families and dogs. While the gorges can be challenging, some sections or alternative trails might be more suitable. For example, the Schluchsee east shore is categorized as family-friendly, offering a wonderful promenade and beach area. When bringing dogs, always ensure they are kept on a leash and that you clean up after them, especially in protected natural areas.

How can I reach the natural monuments, and are there parking options?

Many natural monuments, especially the popular gorges, have designated parking areas. For the Wutach Gorge, there are parking facilities, and a hikers' bus service operates to facilitate access and return between points like Wutachmühle and Schattenmühle. Public transport options are also available to reach the general area, though specific access to trailheads might require local buses or a short drive.

When is the best time of year to visit the natural monuments in Bonndorf im Schwarzwald?

The natural monuments are beautiful year-round, but the best time for hiking is typically from spring to autumn. During these seasons, the weather is generally milder, and the trails are less likely to be slippery from ice or heavy rain. It's recommended to wait a few days after heavy rainfall before attempting gorge hikes, as paths can become very muddy and treacherous. The vibrant flora and fauna are particularly active in spring and summer.

What unique geological features or wildlife can I observe in the Wutach Gorge?

The Wutach Gorge is a geological marvel, formed by the Wutach river's diversion after the last Ice Age, leading to significant erosion. You can observe impressive rock formations and the phenomenon of the Wutach seeping underground in certain areas, only to reappear later. The gorge is also a significant conservation area, boasting remarkable biodiversity with 1,200 different plant species and 500 types of butterflies, and is classified as a European Bird Reserve.

Are there any lesser-known natural monuments or hidden gems worth exploring?
