Hiddingsen chambered tomb

Highlight • Historical Site

The stone box was once the quarry workers' accommodation.
The stone box grave was only discovered during quarry work in 1934.
This grave was originally 16.8 m long, 2.8 m wide and 2 m high. The surrounding walls were made of vertical lime slabs and formed an entrance in a southwesterly direction. It is an elaborately built collective grave that has been used as such for generations.
During the subsequent excavations, 98 human, relatively small skeletons were found, which date from around 3000 to 2500 BC. The stone box grave of Hiddingsen itself is dated to around 3000 BC.

It is located right next to the forest restaurant Zur Steinkiste. Nice piece of land with a playground. The adjacent nature reserve invites you to a nice walk to the wild horses and Taurus cattle.

Stone Cist of Hiddingsen (Megalithic Tomb)

Highlight • Historical Site

The megalithic grave is located in the city of Soest, in the southern district of Hiddingsen, around 900 m from the town centre. The tomb is not particularly well preserved. The remains of 25 stone slabs or dry wall packings can be seen from the formerly imposing complex, which only protrude a few decimeters from the modern gravel bed. Of these, only nine still belong to the Neolithic construction. Immediately after the excavation of the monument in 1934, missing wall stones were added, but without marking them. Since they were uncovered, the limestone slabs have been exposed to the weather and vegetation, which is causing the stones to slowly disintegrate.

The path is very muddy in places. Only recommended in dry weather, or with rubber boots.

You don't always have to have better results. You should also have a heart for animals.

A megalithic tomb of extraordinary size. The information is diverse, but such a grave could have been built as a model 1;1

Even if they are beautiful to look at, these animals have less to look for here than the bison in the Sauerland region. Better results are achieved with grazing by Heidschnucke sheep and sheep and the entire area can be made accessible to the population.

It is one of the few large stone tombs in this area, in my opinion even the only one. A lot of information has now been made available to metal sculptures modeled on stones, such as: B. that about 90 dead were buried and the skeletons disappeared in the times of the 3rd Reich. It is a pity that one could not bring oneself to recreate such a grave site. It would be a highlight for your area and certainly a magnet for visitors.
