Leanachan Forest on the northern slopes of Ben Nevis is well-developed for mountain biking and walking trails. It's an active working forest, managed by Forestry and Land Scotland so the trails do change as logging work continues.

Hotel and cafe located right where the gondola starts. The trail going up is pretty bad. Most of it is for bikes coming down, and signs tell you not to walk there.

It offers an occassion to drink a good coffee - and more when desired. Staff is very friendly.

Red graded single track which takes you downhill through the trees, featuring, amongst other technicalities, some boardwalk. This is part of the Witch's cross country trail and has been used in several competitions held here.

The top of the Nevis Range Gondola is situated at 650m above sea level and is an ideal place to start your walk towards the Munros of Aonach Mòr and Beag, in addition to being a fantastic viewpoint. Check the opening times of the Gondola here: https://www.nevisrange.co.uk/activities/mountain-gondola/ There is also a cafe here.

The region is home to world-class mountain biking. Two of the most prominent bike parks are Nevis Range Mountain Resort, known for its gondola access and diverse trails, and Laggan Wolftrax, which offers a wide range of trails from green to black, including a dedicated bike park. Additionally, the Leanachan Forest Trails provide well-developed mountain biking and walking routes.
Yes, both Nevis Range and Laggan Wolftrax offer options for beginners and families. Nevis Range has the Blue Adder Trail, a blue-graded trail with features like boardwalks and small jumps, and the Nevis Blue Doon, the UK's longest blue-graded downhill trail. Laggan Wolftrax features the 'Wolf Cub' green route, designed for novices and young children, and blue trails like 'Blaeberry Flapjack' for intermediate riders.
Experienced riders will find plenty of challenges. Nevis Range is home to the iconic UCI World Cup Downhill Track and 'Top Chief', both expert-level, gondola-accessed downhill trails. Laggan Wolftrax offers 'The Red', a 13.4km trail with technical sections and features like 'Air's Rock', and 'The Black', a 6.4km technical singletrack with drop-offs and boulder fields, including the famous '2 Ton Drop' and 'Devil's Chessboard'.
Both Nevis Range and Laggan Wolftrax are well-equipped. Nevis Range Mountain Resort has a visitor center, bike shop with hire and workshop facilities, a cafe, and toilets. Laggan Wolftrax also boasts a visitor center with a cafe, toilets, coin-operated showers, a bike shop, and bike hire.
Yes, bike hire is available at the main bike parks. Both Nevis Range Mountain Resort and Laggan Wolftrax have bike shops that offer rental services, making it convenient to access trails even if you don't bring your own equipment.
The mountain biking season generally runs from spring through autumn. While some trails, like the Lower Forest Trails at Nevis Range, are open year-round, the best conditions for all trails, especially the higher-altitude and more technical ones, are typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October) when the weather is milder and trails are drier. Winter biking is possible but can be subject to snow and ice, particularly at higher elevations.
Many forest tracks and less technical routes in the wider area, such as parts of the Leanachan Forest and the Great Glen Way, are suitable for cycling with dogs, provided they are well-behaved and kept under control. Always check specific park rules or local signage regarding dog access on dedicated mountain bike trails.
Beyond mountain biking, the region offers a wealth of outdoor activities. You can explore various hiking trails, from easy walks to more challenging routes. There are also opportunities for gravel biking, with routes like the Caledonian Canal loop or the Loch Ossian Gravel Road. Absolutely. The Scottish Highlands provide stunning backdrops for cycling. At Nevis Range, the top of the Nevis Range Mountain Gondola Station (Monadh Nibheis) offers fantastic panoramic views, including Ben Nevis. Laggan Wolftrax also provides superb views of the Monadhliath hills. Many other routes in the wider area, such as those in Leanachan Forest, offer picturesque views of the Easain Munros and other Highland landscapes.
The 'Witch's Trails' are a network of cross-country trails located within the Leanachan Forest at the base of Nevis Range. They cater to all abilities, from novices to experienced riders, and include trails like 'The Voodoo' (blue) and the 'World Champs Route' (red). The Haggis Trap and Witch's Brew Trail is a red-graded single track within this network, known for its technical features and boardwalk sections.
While Nevis Range and Laggan Wolftrax are popular, the wider area around Spean Bridge, Roy Bridge, and Achnacarry offers numerous forest tracks and less-trafficked routes. Exploring the extensive network of trails in Leanachan Forest or parts of the Great Glen Way can provide a more serene cycling experience, especially outside peak times. These trails often offer varied terrain and stunning views away from the main bike park crowds.
