Sue
May 22, 2025, Bald Eagle Nest Viewing Area

After losing their nest to a lightning strike in August, it was unclear which location the eagles would choose for their to new nest. With limited suitable nesting trees in the area—including one along the trail near their previous nest—they have now settled in a tree here, near the southern end of S. 104th St.

This point offers amazing views of an open canyon (with a bathroom just in case). Many people drive up to this point, but they are missing the canyon hike on the way up. You can head back down from this point, or continue on to the much longer (and scenic) Lookout Mountain Trail.

No need to go very far from the city to find yourself in the wilderness. Lichen Peak is a good example of this.

South Boulder Peak is one of Boulder must do runs – it's quite technical, offers amazing views and is super easy to reach from the city. Combine it with the neighboring Bear Peak for a perfect loop.

Bear Peak is quite a tough run – especially the last ascent is more scrambling than anything else. But it's worth it: The views from Bear Peak are amazing. To the east the vastness of the Great Plains and to the west the snow capped summits of the Rocky Mountains. From here it's only a short trail to South Boulder Peak summit, to add some more miles or for another perspective on the landscape.
