You can easily reach the foot of the waterfall in just over half an hour from Autoire (follow the signs). From here the path begins in serpentines up the rocks - difficult, but worth it because of the great view!

Gouffre de Padirac

Highlight • Cave

The Gouffre and about 1 km of the underground cave system are open from late March to early November of a year at daytime, sometimes even in the evening, for visitors. For the descent into the Gouffre a steel tower with 455 steps was built. There are also two elevators available. At the foot of the Gouffre a ramp leads over the debris cone to a depth of 103 m and then through the eroded tube of the river. From a concrete pier, visitors to the caves will continue for 500m on barges along the up to 4m deep river, bordered by rock, to a crevasse where the cave expands. Guided cave tours take secured steps through the 94m high Salle du grand Dôme, the Salle des Grands Gours with large sinter basins and a 40m high and 6m wide stalagmite and a 25m long, 4m thick stalactite that touches the surface of the river. About 1.5 km from the entrance ends the sightseeing opportunity. Rear areas of the cave are open to scientists only for research purposes

Unfortunately, not much water always runs down when it is drier.

In a word: breathtaking. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to these caves. The Padirac Gorge is without a doubt the most beautiful in France, and its dimensions are extraordinary. Another great feature is that the cave tour is narrated with an audio guide (in your own language). During the tour, a boatman will be waiting for you for a small boat trip through the caves. Plenty to admire: Giant limestone concretions, underground lakes, incredible serpentine sculptures, impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The only downside (as far as I'm concerned): it's very touristy. Tip: combine a visit to the caves with a visit to Racomadour (the city in the rocks).

It's hard not to be amazed by the Gouffre de Padirac. More than a hundred meters deep and crossed by an underground river (which you will have to take for 500m thanks to the boatmen), the visit to this gem, although short, plunges us into another universe. It’s an experience you absolutely have to live.
