Nestled behind the main shopping street in Towcester is this unassuming mound of historic earth. Now turned into a small park area with a spiral path to the top you can get views over the rooftops of the town centre. Bury Mount and Water Meadows park (just a couple of minutes North East by bike), won the restoration category at the Museums and Heritage Awards 2011 beating Westminister Abbey which came second. The mount is the restored remains of what is thought to be a 12th century motte and bailey fortification. The Battle of Edgecote Moor took place 6 miles (9.7 km) north east of Banbury, Oxfordshire, in what is now the civil parish of Chipping Warden and Edgcote, England on 26 July 1469 during the Wars of the Roses. The site of the battle was actually Danes Moor in Northamptonshire, at a crossing of a tributary of the River Cherwell.
