May 6, 2026, Sabbiuno Memorial to the Fallen Partisans

Memorial of the massacre by German troops in reprisal during World War II. Several partisans and civilians were shot and left to fall into the gullies below, where a large white cross now stands.

It is one of the most important places of remembrance of anti-fascism in Bologna. Here, in December 1944, groups of partisans were led by the Nazi-Fascists on several occasions and then shot. Their bodies were found, after the war, in the ravine below. Almost thirty years later, thanks to the economic effort of the Municipalities that created the “Committee to Honor the Fallen of Sabbiuno” and with the mostly voluntary and free work of designers and workers, what is considered one of the most evocative monuments to the Resistance was created. The path from the farmhouse to the site of the massacre is marked by fifty-three boulders with the names of the recognized victims engraved on them. The fifty-fourth was placed to remember all the other fallen up to the symbolic number of one hundred, as their real number could not be ascertained. The curved concrete wall represents the deployment of the soldiers and the red barbed wire the falling of the bodies to the valley where a white cross is placed. The project is by the Gruppo Architetti Città Nuova, and the inauguration took place on 2 June 1973.

Monte delle Formiche is a relief in the middle Bolognese Apennines above Pianoro, between the Idice valleys and the Zena valley. It has an altitude of 638 m. The name of the mountain seems to be linked to a natural phenomenon that occurs annually around September 8th, the feast day of the Madonna to whom a sanctuary is dedicated at the top of the mountain. Swarms of winged ants of the Mirmyca Scabrinodis variety migrate to this peak from central Europe to make their nuptial flight and die there. The event, which has been witnessed since ancient times, has over time taken on an almost miraculous value, a sort of homage from nature to the Madonna. From the sanctuary there is a beautiful panoramic view of the valleys below. By bike it is a beautiful climb with significant gradients.

done the trail in 5 days alone in July 2023, no comment can give an idea of the feeling of happiness, freedom, tension..... I met many guys (and this gives me the idea that the future will be better than what we elderly people leave).... I cried upon arrival in Piazza della Signoria..... as I have already posted "if you have someone you don't love tell them to take the path, if instead you have someone you who you love tell them to do it... in any case they will thank you".

As you traverse the Via Degli Dei, a fascinating piece of history emerges—the Sandstone Quarry, a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient Romans. This quarry, with its rugged charm, unveils the foundations of the Roman military road that once threaded through these hills. The echoes of clinking tools and the rhythmic sounds of labor resonate through time as you explore the quarry. Carved out of the earth by the hands of Roman builders, the sandstone here served as the very building blocks of their ambitious road construction projects. The stones extracted from this quarry became the sturdy foundation of the roads that connected distant corners of the Roman Empire.

The top of Mount Calvo is... bald, and this allows the view to sweep wide and caress with the eyes the ridges that descend towards the Val di Zena.
