The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the Kitchen Creek Road at this location. It is a good spot to get on or off the trail. If you need to find a more busy place, continue south along Kitchen Creek Road towards I-8 and Old Highway 80.

There is room for at least four tents in Fred Canyon. You can pitch your tent under some trees that provide nice shade in hot weather. There is a little stream that might have water in wet years.

If you decide to hike the strenuous 17 miles in total, you will be rewarded with this unique relic from the past: a wooden curved railway in the middle of the desert. There are also old trains to explore. Keep in mind that the trail is located on private property!
