The church of Panagia Finikias (Greek: Παναγία Φοινικιά), located on a small, idyllic peninsula or former islet in the middle of the Messolonghi and Aitoliko lagoon. The stone, single-nave basilica was built in 1804 and served at times as a small monastery. The chapel, surrounded by cypress and eucalyptus trees, was historically a preferred retreat for the famous British poet Lord Byron during his stay in Messolonghi. He appreciated the absolute silence and picturesque backdrop there for his contemplation. It is located directly in the area of the vast, shallow salt pans of Messolonghi. When there is no wind, the building is spectacularly reflected on the smooth water surface. The church is now easily accessible on foot or by bicycle via a narrow spit/road.

There is a small spring adjacent to the chapel. It is surrounded by a wall that is perfect for protection from the wind, making it a very good bivouac spot. There is even a table with stone benches.

Phinikia is a small, picturesque island on the edge of the saltworks between Messolonghi and Aetolikon. On the island stands a small 18th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The island was a favorite stop of the Romantic poet Lord Byron during his stay in Messolonghi. Phinikia is a truly interesting place to admire the lagoon and the local saltworks. If you're lucky, you might even spot swans and flamingos, which come to the lagoon once a year. The sunset at the site is amazing. In summer, you'll likely see people taking medicinal baths in the warm waters of the salty lagoon.

We were guided to this road, which is white on the maps, via komoot. Google Street View is not available. It consists of field and gravel paths. Some parts are rocky and coarse gravel (see photo). Not really suitable for road bikes, but gravel-friendly in parts.
