Best in early spring when the water is really flowing, but also in summer to swim. Don’t pay for 🅿️! Park along street at small bridge over the river and walk the river down for 20 minutes. Cliff climbs and other caves around as well. Easy 1/2 day.

A bit hidden. You have to go over the small waterfall and then along the rocks, there is also a red and white marking on the rock.

The best way to get to the lower part of the waterfall is via the path that begins in Progonat and is signposted. If you want to go to the incredible multi-stage waterfall, the path from there is a bit complicated. It is easier if you come from the steep curve of the road between Lekdush and Progonat and climb over the guard rail there. Then simply follow the water in the stream bed and you will come to a path that is soon marked with red sprayed arrows. Both paths are a bit adventurous and not that easy, but doable and the waterfall is of course incredibly beautiful! The path from above is shorter than the one from Progonat, but also a bit more difficult.

For an untouched experience, the Peshtura Waterfall (Ujevara e Peshtures Progonat) is a true hidden gem. Located deep within the Kurvelesh valleys, it features multiple cascades up to 400 meters high and turquoise pools. The journey often involves an adventurous 1-hour walk through forests, caves, and a natural rock tunnel. Another option is the Progonat Waterfall, which offers a challenging but rewarding path to its incredible multi-stage cascades, especially beautiful in early spring.
The spring season is generally ideal for visiting waterfalls in the Gjirokastër region, as the water flow is strongest and most impressive due to snowmelt. For instance, Peshtura Waterfall is particularly beautiful in spring. However, some waterfalls like Progonat Waterfall are also great in summer for swimming and cooling off.
Yes, the Vjosa Waterfalls near Këlcyrë are noted as family-friendly. They are easily accessible, and you'll find restaurants nearby, making it a convenient spot for a family outing.
The region offers diverse natural beauty. At Peshtura Waterfall, you'll find a curtain of water over limestone rock, crystal-clear turquoise pools, and surrounding forests and caves. The Selcka Waterfall is set within a gorge, forming a stunning pool and narrow canyons. The Osumi Canyon features eight waterfalls, dramatic rock formations, and an untouched ecosystem. Even the Benja Thermal Baths area, while known for its springs, has smaller cascades within the Langarica Canyon and the powerful Vjosa River.
Yes, several spots offer refreshing swimming opportunities. The Peshtura Waterfall plunges into crystal-clear turquoise pools, perfect for a dip. Similarly, the Selcka Waterfall forms a pristine pool where visitors can cool off. The Progonat Waterfall is also suitable for swimming in summer.
You can find various outdoor activities. For hiking, explore routes like the 'Wooden Bridge Over Stream – Small Concrete Bridge loop from Bogovë' or the 'Waterfall in the Albanian Alps – Sopotit Waterfall loop from Strëmbec'. For cycling, consider the 'Kadi Bridge – Bënja Thermal Springs loop from Petran'. You can find more details and routes in the Waterfall hikes in Gjirokastër and Cycling in Gjirokastër guides.
Some waterfalls require a moderate to challenging effort. Reaching the multi-stage Progonat Waterfall can be adventurous, with paths that are 'a bit complicated' or 'a bit more difficult' involving climbing over guard rails and following stream beds. The Selcka Waterfall is also described as 'somewhat difficult to be reached, due to mountainous terrain', requiring a moderate hike.
While the waterfalls are primarily natural attractions, the broader region offers historical context. Near the Benja Thermal Baths, you'll find the iconic Ottoman-era Kadiut Bridge arching over the Langarica Canyon. The Selcka Waterfall is often a highlight of tours exploring the Zagoria Hidden Valley, which is rich in heritage. For more information on the Zagoria Hidden Valley, you can visit happytovisit.com.
Although geographically distinct, the Osumi Canyon is a significant natural attraction often included in tours originating from the Gjirokastër District. It features eight waterfalls, including the 'Waterfall of Love', and is popular for rafting or river tubing, especially between February and June when water levels are higher.
Given the adventurous and sometimes challenging terrain, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking shoes. Depending on the season, bring swimwear if you plan to cool off in the pools. Water, snacks, and a camera are also recommended to capture the stunning natural beauty. For more specific trail details, check individual route descriptions.
Accommodation options are typically found in nearby towns or villages rather than directly at the waterfall sites. For instance, the Vjosa Waterfalls near Këlcyrë are close to the town of Këlcyrë. For the Benja Thermal Baths and Langarica Canyon, the town of Përmet is a common base. For more remote waterfalls like Peshtura or Selcka, you might find guesthouses in surrounding villages or consider staying in Gjirokastër itself and taking day trips.
