Koło Castle, built after 1365 on the orders of King Casimir the Great, guarded a vital route from Greater Poland towards Łęczyca through the Warta Valley. Situated on an artificial hill at a river bend, it was a rectangular structure with a massive keep and perimeter walls. In the 15th century, it served as a meeting place for the Greater Poland nobility and a royal residence, frequently visited by Władysław Jagiełło and Casimir IV Jagiellon. After being abandoned by the starosts in the 16th century, it fell into ruin, and its walls were partially demolished.
