Cegielnia Ponds in Woźniki

Highlight • Lake

In its vicinity there are ponds from clay quarries – a paradise for anglers, and in the last quarry not yet filled with water, a discovery on a global scale was made.

A unique discovery on a global scale was made by a group of students from the University of Warsaw under the supervision of Dr. Tomasz Sulej from the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. They discovered the skull and mandible of a cyclotosaurus, an amphibian that lived 230 million years ago, before the dinosaurs. - There are maybe four such finds in the whole world, nowhere else are there such small skulls. We started our paleontological excavations on Monday and on the first day we made such a discovery. We will work here for another two weeks, we are not assuming anything, but in this quarry you can find various wonders - says Sulej with excitement. Cyclotosaurs occurred in the Late Triassic in the area of today's Central Europe and North America. The body size slightly exceeded 2 m, and the skull measured up to 57 cm. Cyclotosaurus was a predatory, amphibious reptile that hunted like today's alligators. The local cyclotosaurus turned out to be even larger than the one in Krasiejów, where the first complete jaw and long bones of this species in the world were found. The local amphibian was about 4-5 meters long.

Excavations in Woźniki have been conducted for 7 years. Cyclotosaurus is not the only discovery made on the premises of the Woźniki brickyard. Research has been conducted here since 2006. So far, it has been possible to find the remains of many groups of amphibians and reptiles that lived in this area 230 million years ago. These are probably the oldest of all land animals that have been found in Silesia so far. So far, in Woźniki, paleontologists have come across the remains of a shark and a lungfish, which are also extremely rare.

Good food, and cold beer (non-alcoholic of course). On weekends in high season you have to wait in line, but it's worth it.

A pleasant place to camp and relax by the water. Nearby shops and restaurants. In the forest on the eastern and western sides of the reservoir you can camp - this is an area from the "spend the night in the forest" program.
