It was dry today, and it's not because it hasn't rained this past month.

It always seems to me more like a lagoon than a mere pond.

Nice walk through beautiful forest. Doable when it is hot or when it rains because of the dense canopy for most of the walk. Sometimes the path was overgrown but we could always find it thanks to komoot. The start of the walk took some searching. After the house (from Bilbao) take the country road immediately on the right and park the car there. Very quiet. Didn't meet anyone

I have lived in Vitoria for many years, and I had never heard of these wells just a stone's throw from the city. Very curious.

Irrigation pond, but a beautiful turquoise blue, depending on the perspective it looks like a small Canadian lake.

Small but charming lagoon of the Gorbea natural park. A good idea to combine it with the Altube and Corraladas waterfalls.

The region offers several distinct natural features. You can visit Pozos de Lendia, a unique spot where a pool of water emerges from a rock cavity. Lamioxin Lagoon is nestled within a beautiful forest, offering a peaceful atmosphere and opportunities for birdwatching. Lake Arreo is surrounded by an impressive natural landscape of cereal plantations and oak forests, also ideal for birdwatching.
Yes, both Lamioxin Lagoon and Lake Arreo are considered family-friendly. Lamioxin Lagoon offers a nice walk through a beautiful forest, often shaded by a dense canopy, making it pleasant even on warmer days. Lake Arreo is also suitable for families, providing a natural setting for gentle exploration and birdwatching.
Beyond exploring the lakes themselves, the broader Kuartango area offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous routes for gravel biking, road cycling, and mountain biking. For instance, there are gravel biking routes like the 'Atxa Park – Ullibarri-Gamboa Reservoir loop'. Road cyclists can explore routes such as the 'Lavadero de Manurga – Aiurdin Pass loop'. For mountain biking, consider trails like the 'Pozos de Lendia – Encinal Tower loop'.
Yes, the lakes around Kuartango are excellent for birdwatching. Lamioxin Lagoon is known as a haven of peace and a good place to watch birds. Similarly, Lake Arreo is situated in an environment surrounded by cereal plantations and oak forests, making it a prime location for observing various bird species.
The lakes can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the experience varies. During the dry season, Pozos de Lendia may be practically empty, so it's best visited after rainfall to see its unique water pool. Lamioxin Lagoon's dense canopy makes it suitable even on hot or rainy days. For general outdoor activities and enjoying the natural landscapes, spring and autumn often offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery.
While Kuartango itself features smaller lagoons and ponds, the broader Álava region boasts significant reservoirs. The Ullíbarri-Gamboa Reservoir, north of Vitoria-Gasteiz, is a popular recreational area with bathing beaches, water sports like sailing and canoeing, and a 45 km hiking/biking trail around it. It's also an important wetland for birdwatching. Urrúnaga Lake, bordering Álava and Biscay, offers leisure facilities, restaurants, hotels, and playgrounds.
Visitors appreciate the serene natural settings and the opportunities for peaceful walks. The unique geological feature of Pozos de Lendia is often described as 'very curious' and an 'area in the middle of nature to enjoy the walk'. Lamioxin Lagoon is praised as a 'haven of peace' and for its beautiful forest walk. The 'Reservoir' highlight is noted for its 'beautiful turquoise blue' water, resembling a small Canadian lake.
Beyond the more popular spots, the region also has smaller, more secluded water bodies. There's a 'Reservoir' that, despite being an irrigation pond, is noted for its beautiful turquoise blue water and unique appearance. Another 'Pond' is mentioned on the way to Fraile, though it can sometimes be dry depending on recent rainfall. These offer a more preserved and natural setting for those seeking tranquility.
Given the natural and sometimes rugged terrain, comfortable walking shoes are essential. If you plan on birdwatching, binoculars would be beneficial. For visits during the warmer months, consider bringing insect repellent. As some areas are shaded by dense canopies, a light jacket might be useful even on sunny days, and rain gear is always advisable for unpredictable weather.
While specific circular walks directly around the smaller lakes in Kuartango are not detailed, the broader Álava region offers options. For example, the Ullíbarri-Gamboa Reservoir, a significant body of water accessible from Kuartango, features a 45 km path that circles the entire lake, suitable for walking or mountain biking. This provides a substantial circular route for those looking for a longer excursion.
