Best canyons around Alcalà De Xivert are characterized by natural ravines, known locally as "barrancos," which are integral to the region's landscape. These formations are typically narrow and short, carved into the mountainous terrain, often serving as watercourses. The area is situated within the Serra d'Irta Natural Park, a protected coastal mountain range offering diverse natural features. This park provides a setting for outdoor activities, combining natural formations with historical sites like the Castle of Xivert.

This is the ravine that has the cave of La Franca or Bedico in its bed. It gives access to Santa Magdalena de Polpis, Atalayas and Alcalá de Xivert. At the moment it is broken by the DANA

It is a point at which we can choose several routes. Towards the Castellón airport, towards the area of les Llobateres, the Calaf fountain and Torre d'en Doménec as well as the Coves de Vinromà. These places and populations can be linked with different routes. In my collection by Zona del Masos and Natural Park of Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca, are the aforementioned routes.

The Boixar ravine is located to the north of the Sierra de Irta in the western part. It begins its journey along the AP7 past Santa Magdalena de Pulpis towards Barcelona. For me it is a nice ravine, moderately long and without great difficulty. The path is comfortable to climb and does not have excessively steep sections. Almost at the end of the climb, we can finish either by a shorter section with a steep slope or continue along the old path (my favorite to be able to preserve it) and although a little route is added, we continue along the original section that I consider better more comfortable. In this area of Irta it is one of the most beautiful ravines, once up we can continue along several routes.

A very nice, but not very easy way. Sometimes you have to scramble a bit. If you are traveling with a dog, then your four-legged friend should be agile, fit and fearless. And take water for the dog - the spring was dry, there is almost no water on the way.

In Alcalà De Xivert, you'll find natural ravines, locally known as "barrancos" or gorges, primarily within the Sierra de Irta Natural Park. These are generally suitable for hiking and offer scenic routes through mountainous terrain, rather than technical canyoning for watersports. They are characterized by diverse natural features and often lead to historical sites.
Yes, some barrancos offer routes suitable for families. For instance, the Boixar Ravine is described as moderately long with comfortable paths, making it accessible without great difficulty. Always check specific route details for suitability with children.
Popular barrancos include Font Parra, which features a hiking trail in a dry stream bed, and Boixar Ravine, known for its comfortable paths and scenic beauty. The Embankment crossing also offers a unique passage through a slope.
The barrancos are part of the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, offering stunning scenery where mountains meet the sea. You'll encounter diverse flora and fauna, Mediterranean forests, and unique geological formations. From higher points, such as those reached via the Barranco de la Carrera towards Pico Campanilles, you can enjoy expansive panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast.
The Sierra de Irta Natural Park, where these barrancos are located, is generally pleasant for hiking during spring and autumn when temperatures are milder. Summer can be very hot, making early morning or late afternoon hikes preferable. Winter offers cooler temperatures but some routes, like the Embankment crossing, can be affected by rain, leading to loose stone and deep ditches.
Yes, many routes in the Sierra de Irta, including those near barrancos, connect to historical landmarks. You can find sites such as the Xivert Castle, ancient watchtowers, and hermitages, adding a cultural dimension to your natural exploration. The Barranco del Boixar, for example, is part of a circular hiking route that includes the Castillo de Pulpis.
Beyond exploring the barrancos themselves, the region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking routes, road cycling routes, and mountain biking trails throughout the Sierra de Irta Natural Park. Popular hiking routes include the Xivert Castle Loop and trails within the Natural Park of Serra d'Irta.
The difficulty varies. Some ravines like Boixar Ravine are moderately easy with comfortable paths. Others, like Font Parra, may involve some scrambling and require agility. The ascent through Barranco de la Carrera towards Pico Campanilles is rated medium to high difficulty. Always check specific route descriptions and be prepared for varied terrain.
Visitors appreciate the stunning scenery, the tranquility of the unspoiled natural park, and the opportunity for immersive hiking experiences. The combination of natural beauty with historical elements, such as those found near the Boixar Ravine, is also highly valued. Many describe routes like Font Parra as very beautiful and recommended.
If you plan to hike with a dog, ensure your four-legged friend is agile, fit, and fearless, especially on routes that may involve scrambling, such as Font Parra. It is also crucial to carry enough water for your dog, as natural water sources like springs can be dry.
Yes, some barrancos serve as junctions for multiple routes. For example, Barranc del Asperó is a point from which you can choose several routes leading towards various towns and areas like Castellón airport, les Llobateres, Calaf fountain, Torre d'en Doménec, and Coves de Vinromà.
