Spuikom Oostende-Bredene

Highlight • Lake

A spüikom / drainage basin consists of basins or polders, which are connected via a lock with a seaport and were flooded at high tide in ancient times and emptied at low tide with great force. So excess sludge could be removed without dredgers from the ports.

Zwaanhoek Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Description of the area
The Zwaanhoek is bordered in the north by the Ghent-Oostende railway, in the east and southeast by the Nieuwpoort-Plassendale canal and in the southwest and west by the connecting road with many ribbon developments, Oudenburg-Zandvoorde. The area is bisected by a highway.

Shallow excavations and clay extraction in the past have created a varied area with meadows, ditches and swamps. The Zwaanhoek is a typical low-lying basin. The drainage of the area is fairly isolated.

There are many former clay extraction sites within this sub-area. The salt influence is currently everywhere in the subsurface, but often just too deep to be clearly expressed in many current depressions.

On a sunny winter day we wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the beach. We found that peace in this place, so close and at the same time so remote.

Spuikom

Highlight • Lake

The Spuikom is the southern boundary of the Vuurtorenwijk. A sluice basin is an artificially dug basin that is connected to a seaport. In the past, sluices had the function of removing excess silt from a harbor channel, without the help of dredgers. At high water, the sluice basin was allowed to fill and at low water the lock between the harbor channel and the sluice basin was opened. Due to the great force of the water, the silt was automatically washed back into the sea. The Ostend Spuikom was built from 1900, but the first experiments in 1912 immediately went wrong. The current proved too strong and caused damage to the quay walls of the harbor. In the First World War, the Spuikom was destroyed and never restored afterwards.

Today, more than ever, the Spuikom has a recreational function. The gigantic water surface of 80 hectares (more than 120 football fields!) invites you to sail or surf. You can also fish on the banks with a permit and it is fantastic to jog or cycle around the Spuikom. During the winter months, the northern half of the Spuikom is a resting area for waterfowl: cormorants, goldeneyes, little grebes, grebes and coots. In the spring, the islets in the northwestern part are used by, among other things, breeding terns. Marine scientific research is also carried out in the Spuikom. Finally, the water has been designated 'shellfish water': there are two zones that are used as 'farming parks' for oysters.

Maria Hendrika Park

Highlight • Natural

The Maria Hendrika Park is a park in the Belgian city of Ostend. The park - also called (He)t Bosje by Ostend residents - was created at the request of King Leopold II, who initially wanted to call the park Bois de Boulogne after the famous landscape park on the outskirts of Paris. Eventually the park was named after Leopold's wife Maria Hendrika of Austria.
The park was created on the site of an overgrown piece of forest, just outside the old city walls, south of the barracks. The design was by the German landscape architect Édouard Keilig. At the king's insistence, the Belgian government ceded the plot of land on which the park was built in 1886. The park was then 27 hectares in size. The first works were completed in 1892. The “Avenue de la Reine” now connected the park with the sea wall and the Royal Chalet, one of the wishes of Leopold II. At the end of July 1892, both Koninginnelaan and Maria Hendrika Park were officially put into use. The construction works had transformed the park into a recreational area where one could walk or ride on the constructed paths (with carriages, wagons and especially bicycles!). To further increase its attractiveness, a café-restaurant was built on the island of the pond, the “Laiterie Royale” (the current “Koninginnehof”, or colloquially still “t Laiterietje”). When constructing the park, sports and culture were also considered. A second drinking establishment, linked to a shooting club, was the Armenonville (still existing). A historical museum, the Museum Liebaert (disappeared), was built in a shed previously used by the sculptors of the Graaf de Smet de Naeyer bridges. The clubhouse of the local rowing club (disappeared) was located along the canal on the east side. There was also a swimming school, the Vrije Zwemmers Oostende, but this also disappeared during the recent renovation.
In 1896, the size of the park was doubled with the construction of the Mirror Lake and the Rabbit Pond. In 1913, football fields and a cycling stadium were installed. In 1975-1977, the Heilig Hartziekenhuis, now the AZ Damiaan, was constructed in a part of the east of the park. A new water tower was built in the middle of the park.

Did you know that this pond was dug to provide water for steam trains from Torhout to Ostend? It is therefore no coincidence that it is located along the green axis 'Groene 62', a former steam railway route that extends from Torhout to Ostend.

In the spring of 2022, the landscape park was renovated to respond even more to the silent experience of nature. Among other things, a covered rest point for cyclists and natural play elements for children ensure that the park is a perfect stopover while cycling!

In addition, it is also the ideal place to rest, walk or go fishing and of course enjoy nature.

Facilities on the domain:
- public toilet
- natural play elements
- bicycle storage
- picnic area (also covered)

The Grote Keignaert is located right next to Zandvoorde and is a beautiful nature reserve. You can spot all kinds of birds there. In the area around the Keignaert you will also find fascinating flora, with a number of plants that only thrive in salty soils such as sea rush and salt rush. There are also a surprising number of butterflies to spot, such as the brown argus, the hay animal, and brown and orange sand eyes.

A new cycle path was recently constructed between the Libellaan and the Grintweg, and a separate cycle path was also created along the Grintweg. Furthermore, the City of Ostend also constructed two platforms from where you can admire the beautiful, extensive Keignaertkreek. A walking path was constructed around the Zandvoorde skating track, so that local residents, joggers and walkers now have easier access to this nature zone.

The asphalt surface between the skating track and the Kapittelstraat was completely removed. The zone became a grassland in which a grass path is mowed for walkers. This also applies to the connection between Libellaan and Keignaertlaan. There too, a grass path is being mowed for walkers in an ecologically managed grassland.

Mirror Lake

Highlight • Lake

In the middle of the Spiegelmeer, the sculpture ZON Anima/Animus (a work by Johan Tahon, °1965) rises subtly out of the water, embracing the clouds, the sun on the head, the gaze forever aimed at the sky. The bronze statue (eight meters high) is grafted onto the site and the elliptical lake. It is an anchor, a beacon, a mirror image in the Spiegelmeer. The placement of the statue was a feat. It stands on a pedestal in the Spiegelmeer and the upper part was placed on January 14, 2013 with a Seaking helicopter. It was a symbolic descent of the new Sun on the lake.

A first with Komoot. And delighted to discover this place as I have been frequenting Ostend for 30 years. A moment of restful and serene relaxation where birds are numerous and easily observed. Not to mention the many jellyfish swimming and visible from the banks. An ideal place for a picnic. There are plenty of benches to enjoy the place.

The Creek Area around Ostend is a unique wetland zone, with a network of creeks, marshes, reed beds and grasslands. These creeks were created by the natural silting up of rivers and other waterways. The area has a rich biodiversity, which makes it ideal for a nature walk.
