This sober monument commemorates the victims of the 1849 Doolough tragedy, when hundreds of people trekked through this valley during the Great Famine in the hope of relief. Many did not make it; the journey through the rugged landscape proved fatal. The memorial stands in a quiet spot along Doo Lough, surrounded by steep mountainsides and open water — a landscape that makes the history even more palpable.

Tia Truck Café is a simple but cozy roadside stop along the Delphi–Doolough valley. You'll find coffee, snacks, and a warm, informal atmosphere — ideal as a short break spot amidst the rugged mountain scenery. The location is near the water and offers beautiful sightlines of the surrounding hills.

This road follows the shore of Doo Lough, a picturesque mountain lake nestled between the steep slopes of the Mweelrea range and the Sheeffry Hills. The landscape is desolate, rugged and impressively open, with constant views of the dark water of the lake. The road winds gently along the shore and feels remote, even though it remains very passable.

Elongated lake in a narrow mountain basin, surrounded by steep slopes of the Mweelrea Range and the Sheeffry Hills. The road along the eastern shore winds close to the water, with constant views of the dark lake and rugged mountain flanks. In cloudy weather, the landscape takes on an almost dramatic, quiet atmosphere — typical of the west coast.

The road through Doo Lough Valley is a quiet, narrow route with little traffic, allowing you to fully enjoy the wide sightlines over the dark lake and surrounding mountain flanks. Along the shore are several photogenic spots where water, light, and landscape come together beautifully. This passage logically connects to Delphi Valley, the climb to Doolough Pass, and the understated 1849 memorial, making this stretch one of the most impressive links of the entire route.

Beautiful high valley. You hardly get to cycle because the next photo opportunity is waiting around every corner. Unfortunately, during the great famine in Ireland in 1849, a very tragic chapter in history also unfolded here. 600 starving people were en route from Louisburgh to Delphi, where aid was denied and many perished. A plaque commemorates their fate.
