Best canyons around Vývěry Punkvy are characterized by a unique karst landscape within the Moravian Karst National Nature Reserve. This region features deep gorges, an extensive underground river system, and notable cave formations. The geological processes, particularly the Punkva River, have shaped areas like Suchý žleb, Pustý žleb, and the Punkevní údolí. These natural features offer a combination of subterranean exploration and dramatic landscapes.

You can reach Macoch from two sides, go up to the parking lot and walk about 1 km, or go down to the parking lot, walk about 2 km and take the cable car up. The second option is a bigger experience, we didn't wait in line anywhere, the walk to the cable car was pleasant and you got moving. I recommend visiting both viewpoints, from the bottom you can see the very bottom of Macocha. There are fewer people during the week.

Exciting: the caves in Suchý Žleb, the Dürren Tal, which you can explore yourself (if you have a lamp with you). There is an abundance of that; however, some are closed by bars.

Punkva Cave: many stalactites in the most wondrous shapes, plus a boat trip on an underground river - fascinating. Be sure to book tickets in advance in summer. Otherwise you run the risk of not getting in.

The Macocha gorge from below: a gigantic view of this gorge, which was created during a massive collapse. 138m deep.

First you hike through a stalactite cave, then you have an overwhelming view of a 150m high gorge before you are taken by boat through another cave. Now and then you can get out and marvel at side corridors. Belongs to the absolute top list of caves (gorges) accessible to tourists

Up here you stand over a huge cave and look into the stepmother's gorge (Propast Macocha). In the cave (Punkva cave) there is a view upwards. Worth seeing. We stayed in the Chata Macocha, simple but okay. More information: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macocha

The most popular attractions are the iconic Macocha Abyss, a colossal sinkhole, and the Punkva Caves, which offer a unique underground boat ride and a direct view into the abyss from its bottom. These are central to the Moravian Karst experience.
Yes, the Punkva Caves are considered family-friendly. The tour includes walking through impressive stalactite formations and a boat ride on the underground Punkva River, which is often a highlight for children and adults alike.
Beyond the Macocha Abyss, which has two main viewpoints offering panoramic vistas, you can explore the deep gorges of Pustý Žleb and Suchý Žleb. These areas showcase steep, forested slopes, karst formations, and various geological phenomena like sinkholes. The Macocha nature trail guides visitors through these attractive parts of the reserve.
The Moravian Karst, including Vývěry Punkvy, is beautiful year-round. However, spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and fewer crowds. Summer is also popular, but can be busier. The Punkva Caves maintain a constant cool temperature, making them a good option even on hot days.
The area offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking opportunities, including family-friendly hikes and routes starting from bus stations. For cyclists, there are also road cycling routes available in the wider region.
Yes, the most famous is the Punkva Caves, which are part of the larger Amatérská Cave system. You can also find smaller caves in Suchý Žleb, some of which can be explored independently if you have a lamp, though some are closed off.
Absolutely. While you can view the Macocha Abyss from two upper viewing platforms, a truly unique experience is seeing it from the bottom. This is possible during the Punkva Caves tour, which includes a boat ride on the underground river that emerges at the base of the abyss.
A visit to the Punkva Caves and the Macocha Abyss typically takes a few hours, including travel between the viewpoints and the cave tour itself. If you plan to hike through Pustý Žleb or Suchý Žleb, allow for additional time, depending on the length of your chosen trail.
The Vývěry Punkvy reserve is rich in biodiversity. You might spot unique flora, such as the Matthiol's cortusa which grows exclusively in the Macocha Abyss. The gorges are also crucial habitats for diverse plant and animal species, including rare butterflies and bats that hibernate in the caves.
There are parking lots available near the main attractions. For the Macocha Abyss, you can park at the upper viewpoint and walk, or park at the lower area and take a cable car up. It's advisable to check specific parking locations and availability upon arrival, especially during peak season.
While Macocha Abyss and Punkva Caves are very popular, the gorges of Pustý Žleb and Suchý Žleb, while integral to the area, might offer a more tranquil experience, especially if you venture further along their trails away from the main tourist hubs.
For exploring the gorges, comfortable hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Inside the Punkva Caves, the temperature is consistently cool (around 7-8°C), so a light jacket or sweater is advisable even in summer. The paths can be damp, so good grip on footwear is beneficial.
