Between the village of Soubey and the Hotel & Campsite of Tariche, there is a connecting path that can be ridden with a gravel bike or a bike with wide tires – the section is not suitable for road bikes as it runs on gravel for a longer stretch. The landscape here is beautiful: you pass a few farms and see the Doubs flowing alongside you. This idyll makes up for every drop of sweat!

Please note that most of the photos associated with the route are photos of the via ferrata and the names of the ladders themselves, which are very solid stairs and not rope bridges! It is perfectly feasible for hiking, even if the height can be disconcerting.

Mystical place with the remains of the Anabaptist bridge that stood here. Meeting place of the Anabaptists who settled here from around 1528 to protect themselves from persecution by the Bernese government. Old engravings from the 16th century can be found on the walls of the gorge. The Anabaptists still meet at this place today... Cool in midsummer, cold in autumn...

This 500 meters long via ferrata with a 100 meters positive difference in altitude takes place on the French-Swiss border, in the grandiose and vertiginous setting of the Doubs gorges which for a long time sheltered the smuggling activities between these two countries. Very playful and vertiginous with ladders, footbridges, a zip line, cable and Nepalese bridges, it is certainly one of the most beautiful and impressive via ferrata of the region. After a few minutes of walking on a path, the course begins in the beautiful vertical limestone cliff by a first ladder soon followed by a Nepalese bridge, a beam and a slightly overhanging dihedral. This is the most physical part of the route, and it precedes the first escape route that leads to the Cendrée lookout. The next section offers a short, slightly overhanging passage, then a Tibetan bridge made of logs and a 42-meter-long "3-strand" cable bridge, both of which test your balance. The itinerary continues across a ledge (second possible escape route), takes a descending ladder, crosses a new cable bridge ("2 strands" this time), then goes up vertically by exploiting the weaknesses of the wall. The ladder and the beam that follow announce the long 60 meter zip line that can be avoided via the third escape route (but that would be a shame!). A last beam and a steep and original rope ladder bring you to the end of the via ferrata. A safe path follows the cliff, passes by the belvedere where you can still admire the superb landscapes, then follows the route of the smugglers of yesteryear before bringing you back to the parking lot. The region around Saignelégier offers several captivating gorges. Among the most popular are The Ladders of Death, known for its exhilarating via ferrata, and Combe de Biaufond, a magical gorge with unspoiled woods and a path featuring ladders and footbridges. Another favorite is the Ladder Trail and Waterfall in Parc naturel régional du Doubs Horloger, which offers a challenging hike through a lush, Amazon-like environment.
Yes, Combe Tabeillon is considered family-friendly. It offers a pleasant walk through a gorge and forest, with a moderate elevation change, making it enjoyable for various ages. While some other gorges have challenging sections with ladders, Combe Tabeillon provides a more accessible experience.
The terrain varies significantly. You can expect paths that range from well-developed trails with stairs and footbridges, as seen in Combe de Biaufond, to narrow, muddy sections crossing small streams, like those found on the Ladder Trail and Waterfall. Many routes feature metal structures, ladders, and even via ferrata sections, especially at The Ladders of Death. Sure-footedness is often required.
The region is rich in history. The Ladders of Death were historically used by smugglers between France and Switzerland, offering a unique blend of sport and historical adventure. Additionally, Täuferbrücke (Pont des Anabaptistes) is a mystical place steeped in history, where Anabaptists secretly met and left ancient engravings on the gorge walls.
While the guide doesn't specify a single 'best' time, the region research suggests that the gorges offer diverse experiences throughout the year. Spring and summer provide lush greenery and pleasant temperatures for hiking, though some trails might be underwater during high water. Autumn offers cooler weather and potentially vibrant foliage. It's advisable to check local weather conditions before visiting, especially for trails that can become muddy or slippery.
Absolutely. The Ladders of Death offers a challenging via ferrata route stretching over 500 meters with a 100-meter elevation change, traversing a largely vertical rock face. The Ladder Trail and Waterfall is also described as challenging, with narrow, muddy paths and ladder sections. These routes are ideal for those seeking an adrenaline rush and require sure-footedness.
Beyond the dramatic rock formations and river-carved landscapes, you'll find lush forests, moss-covered rocks, and diverse flora. Combe de Biaufond is particularly noted for its wild, almost tropical appearance, limestone caves, and opportunities to observe water birds near Lac de Biaufond. Many gorges also feature stunning viewpoints and waterfalls, such as the one on the Ladder Trail and Waterfall.
The region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, including the 'Franco-Swiss Smugglers' Trail' or the 'Etang de la Gruère' loop. For cycling enthusiasts, there are gravel biking routes like the 'Jura pastures – Mont Soleil Wind Farm loop' or the 'Doubs Valley – Doubs loop'. Running trails are also available, such as the 'Chute du Bief — loop' or routes around Saignelégier itself. You can find more details on these activities in the hiking guide, gravel biking guide, and running guide for the Saignelégier area.
Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking experiences and unique blend of nature and history. Many are captivated by the exhilarating challenges of routes like The Ladders of Death, while others appreciate the peaceful yet adventurous atmosphere of places like Combe de Biaufond. The stunning panoramic views, the sense of walking in the footsteps of past smugglers, and the wild, lush scenery are commonly highlighted as favorite aspects.
Yes, safety is important. For challenging routes like The Ladders of Death, proper equipment for via ferrata is essential. For trails with ladders and steep sections, such as Combe de Biaufond, it's recommended not to visit during heavy rain or thunderstorms, as river levels can rise significantly. Paths can be narrow and muddy, so appropriate footwear is crucial. Always be aware of your surroundings and check local conditions before heading out.
While many outdoor areas are dog-friendly, some specific gorge trails may not be suitable. For instance, the path through Combe de Biaufond, with its ladders and steep sections, is explicitly noted as not suitable for dogs. Always check specific trail information or local regulations before bringing your pet.
