Descent into Vikos Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Approximately 30min to go down to the world deepest gorges. 900m deep for 1km rim to rim. I saw a bear near the path 10m from me but he was more scared than me and directly ran away. A local told me that she saw some deer a few days ago. Don't forget to take some water, even that it's not a long hike, it's steep.

Until the end of the 20th century there was only one way to get to the lovely Zagori village of Vradeto - via the so-called Steps (Skala), a winding staircase with about 1000 steps that climbed the side of a gorge (Vikos Gorge ) was built. It starts at the end of a long road from the Zagori village of Kapesovo. The accessibility of Vradeto probably explains its location in the inhospitable highlands near the top of Mount Tymfi. A street was opened in the 1970s.

Fantastic hike. A little fitness is needed for the final ascent. Great scenery and the water of the Vikos you can drink (cleanest river in Europe!)

Vikos Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

deepest Canyon in the world. Awesome but hard hike

The path from the plateau becomes narrower and you suddenly find yourself in a narrow rocky alley. It is a foretaste before you step out into the steep Vīkos Gorge, which is nowhere as visible as from the Belōi viewpoints. This rocky passage in front of you makes it even more exciting - nature has arranged it magnificently.

The upper section of the Vīkos Gorge between the Noūtsos-Kōkkoris Bridge and the Vītsa Steps is not quite as spectacular as further downstream. However, the easier paths are a good way to get into the mood.

Not too far from the descent in Vikos, this destination is suitable for those who are not necessarily looking for the sporty and time-related challenge of a complete traverse, but simply want to have been to the Vikos Gorge. The spot is also shaded in the mornings.

From Megalo Papigo to the Vikos Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The route has about 420 meters of altitude and impresses with ever-changing views of the gorge! Take enough water with you, in summer there is no guarantee that the canyon or springs will carry water.

A very impressive construction feat. That wasn't all that long ago, so until 1974 you really had to walk up these wonderful stairs to the next village if you wanted to visit? Admirable. We were also very impressed by this tour, great views and barely visible from the other side, these stairs built into the mountain.

The staircase stretches over 1100 steps and overcomes a height difference of around 250 metres, including 39 narrow curves. Until the 1970s, this staircase was the only way to and from Vradēto; the current road connection was not completed until 1974.

The staircase stretches over 1100 steps and overcomes a height difference of around 250 metres, including 39 narrow needle-point curves. Until the 1970s, this staircase was the only way to and from Vradēto; the current road connection was only completed in 1974. In addition to the impressive staircase, the view of the rocky flanks, the Mesariā Gorge and the Gradhīsta mountain range is also extremely impressive.
