Lake Burida

Highlight • Lake

Lake Burida was born in 1894 when, on the outskirts of Pordenone along the Rio Maj, a small dam was built with the aim of obtaining an artificial lake of about ten hectares. The collection of water thus achieved, through a fall of eight meters, moved the blades of a turbine capable of producing an average power of about 120 kilowatts. The energy was conveyed to the Amman Cotton Mill in Borgomeduna thanks to a specially built power line on steel pylons. The large plant, in fact, used the strength of several local waterways to cover its energy needs. In this regard, it is interesting to note that, since the end of the nineteenth century, the cotton industries of Pordenone were real pioneers in the field of electricity production, mainly used in factories, but also sold for public lighting.

Parco San Valentino

Highlight • Natural

Parco San Valentino is a city park of over 58,000 square meters. It consists of a large green area located in the area where the Vallona canal begins. The land derives from the acquisition of two properties: one belonging to the Cartiera Galvani, acquired by the municipality of Pordenone in the 1980s, the other characterized by the private park of Villa Poletti-Marchi, which became municipal property at the end of the 1990s. In the part that originally belonged to the paper mill the characterizing element is the large lake. As evidence of the ancient production activity, a building remains, once a production site, now the residence of numerous associations. While very few traces remain of Villa Poletti-Marchi, as it was almost completely destroyed by fire.

Today, walking in the park you can admire part of its ancient barchessa. The building overlooked the artificial body of water, created to supply energy to the paper mill production plant. In the part of the garden of Villa Poletti-Marchi, built around the 1930s, it is possible to recognize a late romantic imprint in the layout of the greenery, with avenues defined by trees, large lawns and large isolated plants. A peculiarity that cannot be missed is the icebox which was intended for domestic use in the villa; the characteristic exposed stone building is located on a small hill surrounded by paths.

Since September 2020, Parco San Valentino has reopened in its new guise as a totally accessible place, thanks to a redevelopment and renovation project financed entirely by the Pier Antonio Locatelli Foundation, thus becoming one of the largest inclusive parks in Italy.

The new arch bridge over Lake Barcis, inaugurated in the early months of 2021, is a strategic infrastructure located near the Ponte Antoi dam. It is a single-span arch bridge, approximately 78 meters long with an overall width of 12.90 meters. It allows the transit of heavy vehicles — particularly those used for transporting inert materials during the basin's de-silting operations — avoiding passage over the historic dam or through the inhabited center of Barcis. https://www.fvgstrade.it/it/20585/fase-finale-varo-ponte-di-barcis

Lake Aprilis, better known as Lake Barcis, is an artificial basin created in 1954 by damming the Cellina stream near the Ponte Antoi gorge. Its characteristic brilliant green color is due to the combination of sunlight with minerals and calcareous sediments carried by the waters. The presence of dense beech and fir forests along the banks accentuates the emerald green tones.

The Gorgazzo springs have the characteristic of collecting rainwater which, infiltrating the karst structure of the Cansiglio plateau, emerges at the base of the mountain with an already considerable flow rate.

Large green area, of late-Romantic imprint, designed according to the compositional canons of the "English garden" with an avenue of thick holm oaks, Atlas cedars and magnolias. The horse chestnuts in front of the main entrance are among the oldest specimens of this elegant garden. Since November 2010 it has housed the Museo Itinerario della Rosa Antica (MIRA) which winds around the pond and is enriched by a collection of ornamental grasses. Rest areas allow you to admire the flowers and the pond. The Galvani Park, 350 meters from the center, with activities dedicated to art, the large central lawn, also home to concerts, open-air cinema, folk events, the rose garden and the inclusive play area, is considered the green living room of the city.
