Ruins of Badanj Castle

Highlight • Castle

"Badanj Castle is located in the immediate vicinity of Crikvenica, on the course of the Dubračina river, and is the oldest example of medieval fortification construction in the Vinodol area. The original name of the castle, which was abandoned after a severe earthquake in the 14th century, is us unknown. After this event, part of the military probably moved to the neighboring village of Kostelj, and the town of Kotor took control of the mouth of the Dubračina river. Badanj Castle has an irregular, circular plan and includes a large main tower, in which lounges for the Military and water tanks are housed. On the winding approach path there is a substructure with several square residential buildings. The finds of ancient bricks built into the walls of Badanj indicate that the core of the castle was built in the early Byzantine period between the 4th and 4th centuries. and 6th century AD At the foot of the castle, on the left bank of Du bračina, are the ruins of the small Church of the Holy Spirit, built in the 12th century and renovated in the 15th century. Next to the church is the medieval cemetery, which was recreated in the village of Stranče after the old Croatian cemetery in Gorica was abandoned.

The history of Badanj is closely connected with the legend of buried treasure guarded by a large snake. The Croatians who settled here adopted this legend from the locals. The snake as an ancient Mediterranean divine symbol and the legends of buried treasure are very common in the Crikvenica Riviera area and in Vinodol."

I did not really count the number of levels. Was a bit closer to "infinite" for my concepts, but you still get on well. Along the stairs there is a wall that you can use to rest already. Great view from above !!!

650 meters away, in the village of Belgrade, there is also a parking lot. In summer at over 30 °C this is very helpful if you want to see the castle ruins despite the heat.

A mountain trail leads to the ruins, remains of the church on Sv. Damian - 223 m above the place Barbat. The latest research confirms the assumption that this is a building that had three functions: defence, view and observation, which also served as a place of refuge in the event of enemy raids. The floor plan of the fortifications allows the assumption that this could have been the largest Justinian fortification.

October 15, 2023, Krk Old Town

Krk is the cultural center of the island of the same name, Krk, in the Kvarner Bay. The town with its almost unpronounceable name has developed over time into one of the most popular holiday destinations in northern Croatia. The harbor and the Riva waterfront promenade separate modern Krk from the historical part of the city. Holiday homes, holiday apartments, hotels and holiday resorts are located in the modern district. From the lively, friendly Riva waterfront promenade, you can enter the 2,000-year-old urban city center surrounded by city walls through the medieval city gate. The Vela placa right at the beginning is the heart of life. Shops, cafés and restaurants invite you to stroll and stroll.

A beautiful tour leads from Novi Vinodolski via Bribir, Grižane, Tribalje to Grad Drivenik. After a cappuccino and shandy in the café under the castle, we head back to Novi, always on asphalt. 42 km, 700 m altitude.
