From the former Munzinger limestone quarry "Oberes Steingrüble" only the rear 20 m high quarrying wall with numerous crevices and caves remains. For the "Erzknappenlochhöhle" (approx. 2 m high and 8 m deep) a Neolithic settlement is assumed based on flint finds. The 13,000 square meter quarry has been a natural monument since 1979. The open rock face offers a habitat for a special flora and fauna: a pair of kestrels has had its eyrie here for years. Pipistrelle and serotine bats find winter quarters here. Lizards, insects and spiders colonize the sun-warmed steep face. Mosses and lichens form the rather inconspicuous flora.

At this point / I would like to quickly / say something about the source (whereby it corresponds to the art of poetry / if this 'source' is a 'well'): To quote the incomparable humorist Heinz Erhardt (1909 - 1979), who was known to a wide audience for his word jokes and "Noch'n poem", with a short quatrain: "There is certainly much beauty in on the element, the wet. Because you can drink the water. But you can - also leave it." (H.Erhardt)

The caves are a few meters from the path. But you have to scramble up the slope and a few stone steps to reach it.

In the Middle Ages, the Radsstube had a water wheel about 10 meters in size, which was operated via an inlet in order to transport water from a mine shaft located in it (now filled) and a chain of buckets from the shaft.

The region around Schallstadt offers a variety of interesting underground sites. Highly recommended are the Stone Age caves on the Ölberg, known for their narrow paths and panoramic views. Another significant site is the Eselsbrunnen (wheel chamber), which showcases historical mining drainage systems. For a deeper dive into mining history, the Teufelsgrund Münstertal Visitor Mine in the Black Forest is a unique experience.
Yes, the Stone Age caves on the Ölberg are particularly recommended for families and children, offering exciting narrow paths and varied terrain. The Teufelsgrund Münstertal Visitor Mine also caters to families with children's birthday parties and treasure hunts.
Absolutely. The Eselsbrunnen (wheel chamber) provides insight into historical drainage systems with an 8-meter water wheel. The Schwärzhalde Tunnel, dating back to the early 18th century, reveals where barite and quartz were mined. The Teufelsgrund Münstertal Visitor Mine offers a comprehensive experience of over 1,000 years of mining history.
The broader Black Forest and Swabian Alb regions feature impressive stalactites and stalagmites, formed over millennia. The 'Tiefenhöhle' in Laichingen is Germany's only vertical show cave, while the 'Charlottenhöhle' near Giengen-Hürben is one of the longest accessible passages. The 'Wimsen Cave' is unique as Germany's only accessible stream cave by boat, and the 'Tschamberhöhle' offers a cave experience with a stream, gorge, and waterfall made of shell limestone.
Many caves, especially show caves, are accessible year-round, though it's always advisable to check specific opening times. For natural caves like the Stone Age caves on the Ölberg, it's best to avoid damp weather and after rain, as the partially loamy, clayey subsoil can become very slippery.
Caves typically maintain a cool, constant temperature, often around 8-10°C (46-50°F), regardless of the outside weather. It's recommended to wear warm layers, sturdy closed-toe shoes with good grip, and potentially a waterproof jacket, especially for visitor mines or stream caves where conditions can be wet.
Yes, the Fohrenberg Cave is a lesser-known spot hidden in the forest, close to a path. It's partly furnished, offering a glimpse into a more secluded underground space.
The area around Schallstadt offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous easy hikes, such as the '360° Wine View Batzenberg' loop. For cyclists, there are many road cycling routes, including the 'Kreuzweg Pass Summit – Staufen Castle Ruins loop'. Runners can explore running trails like the 'Vineyard and Black Forest View' loop.
While specific public transport routes to individual remote caves can vary, Schallstadt itself is connected. For destinations like the Teufelsgrund Münstertal Visitor Mine, it's advisable to check local bus schedules or consider a combination of train and bus services from larger hubs like Freiburg im Breisgau. For the Stone Age caves on the Ölberg, public transport to nearby towns like Bollschweil or Ehrenstetten would be the starting point, followed by a hike.
For popular sites like the Teufelsgrund Münstertal Visitor Mine, dedicated parking is usually available. For natural caves such as the Stone Age caves on the Ölberg, you'll typically find parking areas in nearby villages or trailheads, requiring a short walk to the cave entrance. It's always best to check specific location details before your visit.
Visitors particularly enjoy the variety of experiences, from the adventurous narrow paths of the Stone Age caves on the Ölberg, especially with children, to the historical insights offered by mining sites like the Eselsbrunnen. The combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and the opportunity for outdoor activities in the surrounding Black Forest region is highly appreciated.
