Wasserschloss Oberstadt

Highlight • Castle

The Wasserburg awarded the Counts of Henneberg 1380 as a fief to the Lords of Kießling. In 1397 the castle was destroyed as a robber's nest. The bower is still preserved. 1469 followed the Marschalk of Ostheim and 1606 the Hennebergische supervisor Humpert von Langen. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Kemenate was extended to Wasserburg and rebuilt in 1607 to the present moated castle. (Source: Wikipedia) Johann Georg von Langen, the founder of modern, regular forestry, was born here in 1699. The castle is extensively renovated and is now privately owned. Although it can not be visited inside, but offers a charming sight even from the outside.

Marisfeld Castle Park

Highlight • Historical Site

Marisfeld Castle Park is an exception among the cultural and historical sights in the village landscape of the district of Hildburghausen. The approximately 7-hectare park area unfolds behind the central village square, which, in addition to a few decorative half-timbered houses, a group of stately linden trees, and above all the building ensemble village church and castle. The latter, a regular four-winged building with striking corner residential towers (1663-1665) was the center of a manor, which also included the castle park. Laid out in the second half of the 19th century in the manner of a landscape garden, the complex under the landowner Baron Hermann von Eichel (1856-1934) achieved its final form around 1890, which is still largely preserved today: Trees and shrubs from the local flora form the skilful arranged vegetation. An intricate network of paths always offers new perspectives on the inner and outer area of the park. A small pond with an island of trees, which used to supply a village mill, is particularly picturesque, especially when the castle above is reflected in the water. From the former hereditary burial ground of the von Eichel family in the rear part of the park, only a few remains and simple staffage buildings unfortunately no longer exist today.

Schloss Stolberg

Highlight • Castle

The castle shares its fate with many other properties. Sold by the trust for 1 DM, it has changed hands several times without much change. A local support group disbanded this year. At least the residents keep the lawns on the property in order. Since then, at least the area around it has looked good.

Beautiful castle ruins with a great view of the city. Please take the main path down, the zigzag trail has been completely destroyed by the forest.

The Johanniterburg Kühndorf is the last well-preserved castle of the Order of St. John in the German-speaking area, the only private member of the Burgenstraße Thüringen e.V. A compact Gothic castle complex awaits you here, the interior of which still breathes the character of the Middle Ages. (Source: johanniterburg.de) The castle can always be visited on the day of the open monument and by appointment.
