The first records of mining activity in the Luckenbach district date back to 1685/1686. The Edelstein brown iron ore mine runs from the tunnel entrance in the Hardt area, approximately 220 meters northwest, and was operated until around 1922, but became uneconomical. At the end of World War II, the tunnel served as an air-raid shelter. While the men were at war, the population, mothers and children, had to take refuge in the tunnel when air raid warnings sounded. Nowadays, however, only part of the mine is accessible due to overburden deposits. For safety reasons, a solid door was installed in the entrance area. From time to time, guided tours of the mine are offered, which I highly recommend.

As is always the case with natural stairs, the steps are unevenly high. Care must be taken to avoid slipping and injuring yourself on the safety bars.

Strenuous, but doable. The path isn't entirely equipped with steps.

Former Edelstein ore mine. The former mine, whose tunnel mouth was reopened in 1991, is located in the Luckenbach district. It was apparently an underground mine operated by hand, as the first information from 1860 suggests. The ore was mined here between 1844 and 1920. The tunnel can also be visited.

While the region is primarily known for its historical mines, there are smaller natural features. For instance, the Limbach Grotto (Madonna Shrine) is located in a rock massif, offering an adventurous path for experienced hikers. You can also find the Felsenstübchen (Froneck-Nister Castle Ruins), a mini rock formation.
You can visit the Assberg slate mine, which is freely accessible and offers insights into slate mining. Another option is the Grube Edelstein Visitor Mine, a historical site with a 100-meter tunnel and guided tours available on specific weekends or by appointment.
The historical mines themselves are the best way to learn. The Assberg slate mine provides information about slate mining in Kroppacher Switzerland, including a tour at 20 meters depth. The Grube Edelstein Visitor Mine showcases the process of ore formation and extraction through its tunnels and guided tours.
Many of the historical mines, like the Assberg slate mine, are generally accessible and can be an educational experience for families. However, some grottoes, like the Limbach Grotto, involve adventurous paths and are recommended for experienced hikers, so they might not be suitable for younger children or those with vertigo.
For the Grube Edelstein Visitor Mine, guided tours are offered on specific weekends or by appointment. It's advisable to check their schedule or contact them directly, especially for group visits. The Assberg slate mine is freely accessible without prior booking.
Temperatures underground are consistently cool, so wear layers, even in summer. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip are essential, as paths can be uneven or damp. For grottoes with adventurous paths, like the Limbach Grotto, hiking boots are highly recommended.
Exploring the Assberg slate mine might take an hour or two, depending on how much time you spend inside. For the Grube Edelstein Visitor Mine, guided tours typically last a specific duration, which you can confirm when booking. Visiting grottoes often involves hiking to the site, so factor in trail time.
Yes, several trails incorporate these sites. The Stair Path to the Historical Slate Mine Limbach is a trail specifically leading to a historical slate mine. Many local hiking routes, such as those found in the Running Trails around Streithausen guide, pass by or near these historical sites.
The region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous MTB Trails around Streithausen, including routes like the 'Nister Bridge – View of Stein-Wingert loop'. There are also Road Cycling Routes and Running Trails that explore the scenic Westerwald landscape.

Parking availability varies by site. For popular visitor mines, there are usually designated parking areas nearby. For smaller grottoes or trailheads leading to them, you might find roadside parking or small lots. It's recommended to check local signage or specific highlight details for precise parking information.
The historical mines can generally be visited year-round, though guided tours might have seasonal schedules. For grottoes and trails, spring through autumn offers the most pleasant weather for hiking. Always check the specific opening hours or access conditions, especially during winter months, as some paths might be more challenging.
