The road is still completely destroyed at the site of the landslide (May 2025), no signs it’s going to be restored soon. When conditions are dry, you have light bikes and are a party of at least 2, you can make it across if you feel adventurous. Otherwise def not recommended!

Due to construction work, many sections of the cycle path are currently closed. However, the bridge is open.

There’s a washout in the road. It’s blocked to cars but passable on a bike (still on pavement) in November 2024.

Update November 2024: the road is closed, for most intents and purposes. The bridge is still completely destroyed, without any sign of reconstruction taking place. Having said that, up to that point is good cycling (depending on the amount of landslides there have been and the bike you’re riding)

Lovely gravel road but there's a catastrophic landslide at km 26 (about 11km in from the south) that you can't pass with a loaded bike. probably doable on foot if it's dry and you have grippy shoes, but I didn't want to carry my bike across the landslip, even with the bags off. was a brilliant road to explore though, super quiet, great views. saw lots of monkeys, Butterflies, Formosan muntjac deer and a yellow throated marten. more wildlife than pretty much any other road on the island!

Road over the hills was pretty quiet. Surface was in good condition all the way. Pleasant meandering road with a few nice views

Recommended to stay on 193 all the way to Hualien unless you really have some business along the road no. 9. Much quieter, small villages, rolling hills.

Excellently paved, fairly new bike path from Gengsheng Road in Yuli to the former Jiudongli train station in Dongli. I jumped on it a bit late, I missed the beginning due riding fast and focused in the rain. Don't miss the whole bike trail. It's really awesome;)
