Just outside of Ebrach you will find a number of ponds in a valley amidst a dense beech forest. The Cistercian monks from the abbey of Ebrach have created the ponds to breed carp and other fish for Lent. Today, the wetland is under protection and forms an important habitat for birds, insects and amphibians.

Winkelhof Estate in the Steigerwald

Highlight • Settlement

The hamlet “Winkelhof” is surrounded by forest between meadows and fish ponds in a valley floor of the Steinachbach, west of Buch.
The group of buildings consists of four farms, with the forester's house and the front half-timbered building shaping the appearance of the hamlet.
The forester's house, a former water and forest castle, was built by the Lords of Thüngfeld. This house stands on a kind of island and is surrounded by a pond except for the driveway. In 1421 the entire hamlet, including the agricultural land, became the property of the Ebrach monastery. Two former forest workers' houses, including the half-timbered building mentioned, have been owned by the Benedictine Münsterschwarzach Abbey for around 20 years.
The place name "Winkelhof" was derived from the original medieval farming settlement "Winkele", which existed south of the hamlet and which was dissolved in the Middle Ages.

Neuer See Gerolzhofen

Highlight • Lake

Around the small town of Gerolzhofen there are three smaller bodies of water, the Gerolzhofener Weiher (the central pond is also known as "Hörnauer See"), the Neuen and the Alten See, each of which is characterized by a wide reed belt. These offer good breeding conditions for some rare bird species, which mainly specialize in reeds. For this reason, a visit is particularly worthwhile at this time. Breeding birds such as bluethroats, great reed warblers, red-crested pochards, purple herons, warblers, black-necked grebes, Montagu's harriers and little bitterns can be observed here.

Großer Hörnausee

Highlight • Lake

The pond industry probably brought the Ebro monks into this room centuries ago. One of the most famous farms in the North Bavarian fishing industry is the fish farm Gerstner in Obervolkach.
The also manages the Hörnausee since about the turn of the millennium.
Just as the lake presents itself on the ground, this is not only a treasure for the fishing industry, but obviously also for many species.

But many other animals and plants can also be discovered here. The newly created habitats in former gravel pits are now populated. Frogs and dragonflies cavort in the waters. In summer you can find numerous butterflies on the floodplain meadows. There are also rarer species such as the dark-breasted bluebird, whose caterpillars develop in ant nests. Cycle paths, a lookout tower and an adventure trail with numerous information points invite you to visit the Mainaue all year round. https://www.naturerlebnis.bayern.de/vergleich_bayernentdecker/20_ufr_mainaue.htm

The “Mainaue bei Augsfeld” nature reserve is an important European breeding area for native bird species and a resting area for migratory birds. Rare and typical floodplain habitats and animal species of European importance are also still widespread in the area. Natural, nutrient-rich lakes have formed in the area of former river loops, which were separated by the dynamics of the river. But such contrasting habitats as fens and dry sandy grasslands can also be found alongside riparian forests and meadows. Bird species such as the sandpiper, little ringed plover and the great egret feel at home in this varied area. An adventure trail enables ideal observation of this rich bird world. An observation hill and additional shelters hidden near the bank make undisturbed observation easier. https://www.naturerlebnis.bayern.de/vergleich_bayernentdecker/20_ufr_mainaue.htm
