Very nice place. Unmarked to avoid tourist traffic. Please be cultural, do not break the sand or break down the slope.

Underground munitions warehouse from Vilnius defensive garrison complex, built between 1923-1939. Each group consisted of 5 underground warehouses, of which 1 was two-level, while remaining 4 are single level. Each of the warehouses had two entrances. There has already been a narrow gauge railway line connecting all the warehouses (underground and above ground) and the defensive bunkers on the east side of the city. Some of the warehouses of this specific complex have been converted by soviets to civil bomb hideouts - see the enlargened entrances. However, when installing additional ventilation soviets have damaged the waterproofing thus there's quite some water inside the last two warehouses. These are possible to enter, but beware of the bats that inhabit these cold and dark cellars.

Lithuania features a variety of natural underground formations, primarily karstic sinkholes and solutional caves. Additionally, there are historical underground structures such as former munitions warehouses, offering both natural and historical exploration opportunities.
The Antakalnis Underground Munitions Warehouses are a historical site, likely built in the 1920s by the Polish army. Today, these warehouses are primarily occupied by bats, including some rare and endangered species, making them significant for both history and wildlife enthusiasts.
The deepest cave in Lithuania is Žalsvasis Spring, an underwater karst cave-spring located in Pasvalys. It reaches a depth of 20 meters and is known for its constant 8 °C water temperature and greenish sediments.
Yes, Karvės ola (The Cow's Cave) in the Biržai Regional Park is steeped in local legend. It's said a cow once sank into it, giving the cave its name. A statue of a cow near the site further elaborates on this folklore, making it a perfect place for families and those interested in local tales.
Karvės ola is a well-type, funnel-formed sinkhole, about 12.6 meters deep. At 9.5 meters, an underground cavity opens, formed from melted gypsum, which splits into five smaller caves: Šlapioji ola (the Wet Cave), Siauroji landa (the Narrow Cave), Šikšnosparnių landa (the Bat Cave), Rupūžės ola (the Toad's Cave) with a small underground lake, and Blizganti ola (the Shiny Cave). The total length of these caves is 46 meters.
The Čiobiškis Cave, found deep within the woods in the Širvintos District, offers a secluded and natural experience. It's approximately 10 meters deep with two connected openings, and its walls are formed from layers of sandstone, appealing to those seeking an unspoiled natural wonder.
Yes, the Skališkių Rock Cave (Sacred Rock Cave) near Vilnius is notable for the icicle formations that appear in winter as water drips from springs. Historically, locals considered the rock and its cave sacred, believing the spring water possessed healing properties, and pilgrims still leave candles and sacred pictures inside.
Near the caves, you can find various outdoor activities. For example, you can explore MTB Trails in Lithuania, enjoy Easy hikes in Lithuania, or go Cycling in Lithuania. These guides offer routes of varying difficulties to suit different preferences.
Yes, similar to the Antakalnis site, the Vilkpėdė Underground Munitions Warehouse is another historical site from the Vilnius defensive garrison complex, built between 1923-1939. These warehouses were designed to store ammunition and offer a glimpse into the region's military past.
The best time to visit depends on the specific cave and your interests. For caves like Skališkių Rock Cave, winter offers unique icicle formations. For underwater exploration at Žalsvasis Spring, the constant water temperature makes it accessible year-round for divers. Generally, warmer months are suitable for exploring surface sinkholes and surrounding areas.
Yes, the Biržai Regional Park is particularly rich in karst phenomena, boasting the highest density of sinkholes in Lithuania. Besides Karvės ola, other named sinkholes in this area include Badger's Cave, Geologist, Fox Cave, Eve's, and Easter, offering a broader landscape for geological exploration, especially along the Badger's Educational Track.
Žalsvasis Spring is officially recognized as the deepest cave in Lithuania, reaching 20 meters. It's a state-protected natural heritage site. The springhead extends to a depth of 21 meters, where it splits into two chambers: "The Sunny Chamber" and "The Chamber Of Aenigma." Its unique underwater features make it a significant site for divers.
