Lourdes Grotto This grotto was built in 1958 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Marian apparitions in Lourdes. During the First World War, Philipp Mehler from Gambach vowed to build a place of worship in his homeland after a miraculous rescue. After a pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1954, from which he brought the statue of the Virgin Mary, he kept his promise and, together with other helpers, built this grotto in a former quarry near the vineyards. The Betzenmühle (formerly Thalmühle) stood south of the Schönrainberg, where there is still a vaulted cellar. This mill was only built after 1700. The Betzemühle - so called because its owner was called Betz, was a gypsum mill. The stones came by ship from Wernfeld-Sachsenheim, where there was also a gypsum mill. The mill had its own loading ramp and its own access to the Main - called the gypsum chute - where the stones were unloaded and the ground gypsum was loaded. Baron von Hutten in Steinbach bought the mill and all of its property and had it closed around 1894, allegedly because of the heavy poaching.
