Lily Pond and Bee House

Highlight • Lake

This facility was built as a romantic park setting in the years 1905 to 1907 under city gardener Josef Krupka and developed into a popular destination. The water lily pond, originally created as a drainage basin for the water reservoir, was supplemented by the bee castle in 1907. The picturesque concrete object comes from an exhibition of the Baden beekeepers' association in the palm house of the city gardens in 1906 and was equipped with beehives.
Today, the ensemble presents itself embedded in the black pine mixed forest as an inconspicuous area where time and weather have left their mark. The concrete pond basin is leaking and damage to the bee castle, e.g. caused by vandalism, is clearly visible.

Doblhoffpark Pond, Baden

Highlight • Lake

The cycle path on the side is quite narrow and you can't see much. If you want to go to the coffee house or boathouse you can drive there from the car park.

Hernstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

Hernstein Castle is located at the foot of a steep, wooded slope on Berndorfer Strasse below the ruins of the fortified tower from the 12th century. Today's palace complex emerged in 1727–30 from a Meierhof, which was initially equipped as a "courtyard house" with a chapel, under Count Karl Joseph von Heussenstein. In 1798 the property became the property of Baron Heinrich von Müller, who had the partially walled park and the artificially dammed pond with the island built. Archduke Ludwig, a nephew of Emperor Franz II, had the palace converted by Theophil von Hansen from 1856–80 into one of the most important historicist (English Gothic) buildings in Austria. The four-leaf complex continues to impress with its highly romantic appearance.

Today the Hernstein Castle is used as a seminar hotel and for parties and weddings

Archduke Leopold Ludwig inherited the property in 1854. Hernstein Castle owes its current appearance to him. He spent 28 years rebuilding and expanding the castle according to plans by Theophil Hansen, who is also the architect of the Parliament in Vienna. Since 2023, the Hotel Schloss Hernstein has been run as a public hotel and is a popular wedding location. More on the history: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Hernstein

A duck oasis ;-) - No, of course also a very nice resting place for us cyclists. From the cafe house on the banks of the pond you can relax and watch the “rundumadum” happenings.
