Beautiful. We found ourselves facing a sudden downpour and decided to stop here for the night. The door is open and inside it is quite empty. There is a broom to clean the floor. We pitched the tent inside for safety, but the roof still held. The shepherd who passed by gave us the ok. There is a working fireplace, but we preferred to light the fire outside the door.

Along this path you come across some cuiles, traditional sheepfolds with stone bases and wooden and branch structures. At this point, there is one of the best preserved. Shepherds have used these structures for generations, tending pigs, goats and oxen. Since the 1950s and 1960s, these sheepfolds have been progressively abandoned, without generational change, with rare exceptions.

The small campsite directly behind the hotel in the dark forest is very rudimentary and can only be recommended to a limited extent. It seems to be run rather reluctantly (it is not advertised anywhere). The hotel itself is upscale and well attended, especially at weekends. Hikers can park in front of the hotel grounds.

Beautiful spot! We still had half a pizza from the night before in Orgosolo, which we enjoyed here. The hut was not locked and seemed inviting for shelter in bad weather/a cold night.

The traditional huts in this region are known as cuiles (or pinnettas). These ancient shepherd's huts are unique structures with stone bases and conical roofs made of juniper trunks and branches. They served as shelters for shepherds and their flocks for centuries and now offer a fascinating glimpse into Sardinia's pastoral heritage, often providing rustic shelter for trekkers.
The cuiles offer a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. They are living testaments to Sardinia's ancient pastoral culture, showcasing ingenious construction techniques adapted to the local climate. Many are situated in breathtaking, scenic locations, providing expansive views. They also serve as basic, unmanned shelters for hikers on long-distance trails, allowing for a profound connection with the wild and unspoiled nature of the Supramonte.
Yes, some cuiles can be used for overnight stays. For example, the Cuile of Su Vaduleddu is an open, unmanaged stone mountain hut with a fireplace where you can spend the night on longer hikes. Another option is the Sheltered spot for lunch / camping, which is inviting for shelter in bad weather or a cold night, has an open door, and a working fireplace. When using these as shelters, it's important to respect the place and avoid leaving any waste.
While many cuiles are rustic, the Coop Enis Monte Maccione Restaurant & Hotel is a family-friendly mountain restaurant and hotel that can serve as a comfortable base. For activities, there are several easy hiking routes suitable for families, such as the "Ancient Holm Oaks – Punta Orotecannas loop from Orthullè/Urzulei" or the "Crucifix at Maccione Viewpoint loop from Ulìana/Oliena." Yes, the Cuiles (Traditional Shepherd's Hut) highlight refers to some of the best-preserved traditional sheepfolds in the area, featuring stone bases and wooden structures. These represent centuries of history and pastoral tradition. Other notable examples mentioned in the region include Cuile Baddore, Cuile Mereu, Cuile Lupiru, and Onammarra, which are nearly century-old structures.
The best time to visit the Supramonte region generally depends on your planned activities. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and exploring the cuiles, avoiding the intense summer heat. During these seasons, the landscape is vibrant, and the weather is typically more stable. Winter can be cold, but some huts with fireplaces, like the Cuile of Su Vaduleddu, can provide shelter.
Yes, the Coop Enis Monte Maccione Restaurant & Hotel offers traditional Sardinian cuisine and a special atmosphere. It's located halfway up the slopes of the Supramonte mountain and serves as an ideal starting point for walks. While many cuiles are remote, this establishment provides a convenient option for dining and accommodation.
The terrain in Supramonte is varied, often characterized by rugged limestone landscapes, ancient holm oak forests, and dramatic sinkholes like Su Sercone. Trails leading to cuiles can range from intermediate to challenging, involving rocky paths and elevation changes. Some cuiles, like the Cuile of Su Vaduleddu, are at higher elevations (around 1000m) and may require a moderate hike, though careful driving can get you close to some.
Many cuiles are strategically located in places of unique beauty with expansive views, as shepherds originally built them to oversee their working areas. The Cuile of Su Vaduleddu, for instance, is situated on an intermediate summit offering great views. The region itself is known for its stunning natural backdrops, making almost any hike to a cuile a scenic experience.
If you plan to visit or stay in a cuile, especially an unmanaged one, it's essential to be self-sufficient. Bring sufficient water, food, and appropriate gear for the weather conditions, including layers of clothing. A sleeping bag and mat are recommended if you plan to stay overnight. A headlamp, first-aid kit, and navigation tools are also crucial, as many cuiles are in remote areas. If a fireplace is available, consider bringing kindling or fire starters.
