This bird watching hut is called Tapsmoer. That is not an exotic bird, but a corruption of the abbot's marsh, the abbot's marsh. In the past, this area belonged to monks who extracted peat.

Update 12-22: I recently saw that there is no cycling ban on the other side of this forest and some paths are not closed, unlike the Regte heath side. Large parts of this forest are forbidden to cyclists. Also quite difficult to access. Just accept that you are not allowed to go everywhere with your MTB.

Wild swimming is generally not recommended in the fens and ponds of Regte Heide & Riels Laag. These water bodies are delicate ecosystems, and swimming can disturb the sensitive flora and fauna. The focus of the area is on nature conservation and observation rather than recreational water sports.
The fens in Regte Heide & Riels Laag are crucial for biodiversity. They are peat-forming wetlands that rely on groundwater input and take thousands of years to develop. They support unique plant and animal communities not found in more acidic bogs, acting as hotspots for rare species. Fens also play a vital role in filtering pollutants, recycling nutrients, and serving as carbon sinks.
While the primary focus is natural beauty, the region does have historical significance. The name 'Tapsmoer' is thought to derive from 't abts moer,' hinting at the historical influence of Norbertine abbeys. Additionally, ancient Bronze Age burial mounds can be found on the Regte Heide, offering a glimpse into the area's past.
The Regte Heide & Riels Laag is a nature reserve, so facilities are limited directly at the fens and ponds. However, nearby towns like Riel and Goirle offer cafes, pubs, and other amenities where you can find refreshments and restrooms before or after your visit.
While many trails in the nature reserve are natural paths and can be uneven, some sections might be more accessible. However, specific wheelchair-accessible paths directly around the fens are not widely highlighted. It's advisable to check specific route details for terrain information if accessibility is a concern.
