The Rødedam was created by building dams and was originally used to raise carp for the royal family. If the water level had to be reduced, the water was channeled through a ditch into the nearby Frederik 2.'s Canal. The dam lake was actually overgrown and renatured and is now the second largest lake in Gribskov. Remnants of the canal can still be seen on the path that has been closed to mountain bikers. This was just one of the many canals that ended up ensuring sufficient water for the mill and lake at Frederiksborg Castle.

The name of the house goes back to a big black brow stallion named Fændrik. This horse had its big time when Christian IV (1577-1648) was king. In the immediate vicinity of the house was a Stuterei. The present house was built around 1900 as a ranger house. For a few years it has been run as a small café. See more: https://www.baadfarten.com/fndrikhus
