August 9, 2026, St. Paul Lutheran Church

On March 31, 1873, St. Paul Lutheran Church began as a Lutheran orphanage at the corner of University Avenue and Main Street. Pastor George Speckhard, who took office in August of that year, was the orphanage director, church pastor, and a teacher for deaf children. The congregation, considered the first Lutheran church in Oakland County, separated from the orphanage and school, which were moved to Detroit in 1875. The congregation, initially housed in a former Baptist church, purchased the current property in 1886 and built a wooden chapel, with congregation members actively participating in the construction. The day school, founded in 1916 with eleven students, represented a significant milestone. In 1918, a new brick church building replaced the original wooden chapel; the cornerstone was laid on August 17, 1917. St. Paul Lutheran Congregation dedicated the current church on January 22, 1973. Its design, which "resembles an ancient ark plowing through the water," replaced the 1917 church, which was once the tallest building in Royal Oak. In the former church, dedicated on January 20, 1918, services were predominantly held in German, with separate seating for men and women and gender-segregated communion.

This parking area off of Merrill Plaisance Street is the main access point for Witherell Woods, which are located within Detroit’s Palmer Park. These woods are a rare pocket of old-growth forest in an urban setting. This 10-acre stand features towering oaks, hickories, beeches, and maples—some over 200 years old—creating a shaded, cathedral-like atmosphere. Unlike the surrounding cityscape, the woods offer a glimpse into Michigan’s pre-settlement landscape, with a rich understory and a quiet, undisturbed feel. Trails are informal, and not cycling friendly, but its a nice place to pause on your ride and maybe lock your bikes and explore on foot.
