Trentabank Heronry Lookout

Highlight • Lake

Trentabank Reservoir (Cheshire Wildlife Trust)
Trentabank Reservoir - The heronry at Trentabank Reservoir is one of the largest in the Peak District and sits within the picturesque Macclesfield Forest. More than 20 pairs of the birds nest amongst the larches toward the eastern end of the reservoir, which in winter is also regularly home to goldeneye and goosander. The surrounding forest also plays host to a secretive herd of red deer, while crossbills feed in the pine tops and peregrines, buzzards and even the occasional red kite patrol the skies above. The heronry is best viewed from the lay-by east of the ranger station and car park, while views of the reservoir can be enjoyed from the small circular path of the main Trust reserve. In some years, video footage from the heronry is also beamed to the ranger station when open to visitors.

Redesmere Lake

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Nice climb from Redesmere along quiet lane to "Ron's Railings". The climb is rewarded by great views across to Jodrell Bank and the Cheshire Plain. Just be aware of other riders and cars coming down round a couple of tight narrow bends. Much better to go up than down this hill as there is a lot of gravel and sand if travelling fast. Continue on at the top to Henbury or Gawsworth, or take first right to Over Alderley via Birtles Lane.

Descent from Pym's Chair to Errwood Reservoir

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

After a fair bit of climbing, you're rewarded with this awesome descent. The road surface is good and there's nothing too technical about it - watch out towards the bottom part though, there are some pot holes and gravel patches and it gets a bit busier with cars and people.

Four reservoirs to see here, two of which provide drinking water to Macclesfield. There are mainly pine trees in the forest. Cheshire's two highest points overshadow the forest so keep scanning the horizon for Shining Tor and the peak of Shutlingsloe, which is often called the 'Cheshire Matterhorn' thanks to its Toblerone-esque shape.

a really fast descent from Pym's chair, down to Erwood reservoir

A nice ride down but be careful. It is narrow and usually lots of cars heading back up. The bottom section is very rough with major potholes. Many punctures on that section.

There is a lovely pub halfway around the reservoir which makes for a perfect resting spot.

Fast. Really, really fast. But: The incline steepens and the corners sharpen the closer you get to the bottom, so beware (especially of oncoming vehicles ascending since there isn't always passing room). Otherwise the surface is largely good and free of loose material unless there has been heavy rain, which tends to wash grit across the surface of the road. Have fun!
