A good way into the valley. A flat out gravel surface that winds around the dams for miles

Elan Valley is a mountain bikers dream. A mix of natural trails that follow the reservoirs and crest the lofty tops of each valley. There's also a great trailhead in the middle of the valley at Nantgwyllt for some great flowing singletrack.

Pen y Garreg Dam third of the Elan Valley Dams, also known as the middle dam. This dam houses an access tunnel to the central tower which is lit by apertures in the downstream side of the dam. Height - 123 ft above river bed. Beautiful scenery a great ride around this area.

The Elan Valley offers several impressive reservoirs, each with unique features. Caban-Coch Dam and Reservoir is known for its elegant design and dramatic overflow when full, making it a great starting point near the visitor centre. Pen-y-Garreg Dam is unique for its central valve tower and an access tunnel through its center that visitors can explore. The Claerwen Reservoir is the largest and newest, offering vast open moorland views and excellent hiking opportunities.
The Elan Valley reservoirs were constructed primarily to supply clean drinking water to Birmingham, England. This massive Victorian engineering project transformed the landscape. Notable historical aspects include the submerged Garreg Ddu dam, which acts more like a bridge, and the nearby ruins of the Nant-y-Gro dam, which was used for Dambusters experiments during WWII.
Yes, the Elan Valley is very family-friendly. Many trails are suitable for all ages, such as sections of the Elan Valley Trail. Exploring the access tunnel within Pen-y-Garreg Dam offers a fascinating glimpse into Victorian engineering. The area also provides opportunities for cycling, birdwatching, and stargazing, being an International Dark Sky Park.

The best time to visit is often in late winter and early spring, especially after heavy rainfall. During these periods, the reservoirs are full, and the dams are in full flow, creating spectacular cascading waterfalls over the spillways. The scenery is picturesque year-round, but the dams are most dramatic when overflowing.
Absolutely. The Elan Valley offers a variety of walking trails for all abilities. You can find walks around individual reservoirs, such as the 'Around Caban Bike Trail' or 'Nant y Gro Walk' near Caban Coch. The Elan Valley Trail itself provides a long, scenic route suitable for walking and cycling, offering views of multiple reservoirs.

Craig Goch, often called the 'top dam,' is widely considered the most beautiful of the Elan Valley dams. It's the highest reservoir, situated over 1,000 feet above sea level, and is admired for its elegantly curved wall and the arched viaduct that carries a roadway across its top. It offers stunning panoramic views and is a popular spot for photography, especially at sunset.
Garreg Ddu is unique because its dam is largely submerged, appearing more like a bridge with a viaduct carrying a road across it. This design helps maintain a consistent water level for the Elan Valley Aqueduct. Its distinctive appearance is particularly striking when water levels are low enough to reveal more of its structure, and the nearby Foel Tower marks where water extraction for Birmingham begins.
Yes, the Elan Valley is designated as an International Dark Sky Park. This means it has exceptionally dark night skies, making it an excellent location for stargazing and enjoying astronomical phenomena away from light pollution.
Visitors frequently praise the stunning natural beauty and the impressive engineering of the dams. Many highlight the peaceful atmosphere, the excellent cycling and walking opportunities, and the dramatic views, especially when the reservoirs are full and overflowing. The sheer scale of the landscape and the sense of being 'a million miles away' are often mentioned.
Beyond the dams themselves, which offer fantastic views, the Gravel Path Along Claerwen Reservoir provides breathtaking views over the expansive lake. The summit of Craig Goch also offers panoramic vistas of the entire Elan Valley. Many trails, like the Elan Reservoir Gravel Track, are noted for their stunning views of the reservoirs.
