Created to provide a steady water supply to power the hydro electric generators Nelly Moss Lakes are two large lakes set amongst woodland in the Cragside Estate. There is a nice trail that allows you to run all around the lakes either as a short loop on their own or as part of a loop of the wider estate.

Like everyone else cycling this lovely lane on NCN1, you'd see no reason not to ride straight past the gate on this double-bend corner. It used to have a handsome sign, and a namplate, and a signboard. It led to a simple but delightfully secluded little bird hide. But when I stopped by today, the signs have gone, and so has the hide. But it still has a short path (like, 50m) from the gate to a lovely little spot overlooking this pond. And the birds were still there, they don't care that the signs have gone. So - stop by. It will fill a delightful minute or two of your day... (Postscript: I made a couple of phone calls, to discover that Northumberland Wildlife Trust, who used to manage the Reserve, pulled out recently... what a shame.)
